One of the things I love about virtually living in BF (I live nearby, but for all intents and purposes I have adopted it as home) is having a steady stream of small quaint businesses ready for sampling. There’s always something else to try in lieu of your usual coffeeshop (although that doesn’t stop me from patronizing the old standbys). There are obscure Japanese restaurants that look like they’re patronized by the Yakuza. There are great authentic fixtures for international cuisine where you can get a tall can of German beer or a round of kimchi and Korean meat. Mostly that’s what we want to discover and highlight in Southbound.
Occasionally though, a small establishment with a few die hard fans will cross over from its best-kept-secret status and suddenly grow and go mainstream. Sinangag Express is one of them. While it hasn’t yet branched out of BF (as far as I know, the SEx we know and love is not the same as the one in Makati Cinema Square—there’s a story there somewhere, but I’m not qualified to tell it), it’s terribly popular and it’s a fair bet that most people living in the area know of it. That said, we’ll throw in our two cents worth and write about it anyway.
Well, the truth is, we’ve written about it quite some time ago, we’re just reposting it here. And though I wanted to add more pictures, the fine ones that I took of last week’s adsilog quota got nuked by a faulty SD card, so they’ll have to wait. :p -ed
[Another aside: Some things just keep growing… Sinangag Express now has branches in the Taft area and Better Living! Oh, and they’ve increased their prices, from 39 to… a whopping 42 bucks per dish! (Hey, you do know I’m being sarcastic about the whopping bit, don’t you? -ed, circa mid 2007]
Sinangag Express is this open restaurant along President’s Ave. To us maniacs (sinangag maniacs that is), this place is better known as S.Ex. You can’t miss it, it’s located in the Greenworld Plaza Building, and it has a yellow and red sign outside and tarp doubling as a sunshade on the porch. There are usually some Volkswagen Beetles parked out front (I think the owner/s own the beetles). I always pass this place going to and from work.
Since it’s a 24-hour operation, it’s no wonder there are always a lot of people eating here late at night or in the wee hours of the morning. It makes a perfect nightcap for those with grueling overtime work, or as an end to a gimmick night with friends. During the mornings there are a few people catching breakfast, mostly yuppies and students.

As the name suggests, the main fare here is sinangag, revolving around the silog (sinangag and itlog) concept. To the uninitiated, sinangag is simply fried rice topped with garlic bits. The menu consists of tapsilog (tapa, sinangag, itlog), chosilog (chorizo), hotsilog (hotdog), adsilog (adobo), liempsilog (liempo), bangsilog (bangus), barsilog (barbeque), cornsilog (corned beef), longsilog (longanisa) and lumpiang-shanghai-silog. All for 39 bucks. Yup, it’s all for 39 bucks, and the servings are generous also. Busog ka dito. Matakaw lang talaga ako, so I always order two meals here (one adsilog and liempsilog). All drinks (soda, iced tea) are 20 bucks.
Here’s a quick rundown on the details:
Place/ambience - Since it’s an open restaurant, it’s usually noisy because it’s right beside President’s Avenue, but the noise is tolerable and not really annoying. The place is nicely lit, and there’s a water feature as well. I remember counting the fish with Betty one time.
Price - Two thumbs up! 39 bucks for all silog meal variants. Drinks are 20 bucks (soda, iced tea). Try out their tokwa’t baboy also, I think it’s 25 bucks.
Smoking - Since it’s in an open area, smoking is no problem. The tables are spread apart evenly so you wouldn’t be bothered much by the person smoking in the next table.
Restroom - There’s a unisex restroom, and you have to borrow the key from the counter. The restroom is nice and clean, with black tiles and wall lamps. Don’t make the mistake of trying to go in the Greenworld Plaza bathroom. :p
People who live in Phase 3 can eat at the Aguirre Avenue branch, although for some reason I always enjoy the President’s branch more. ;) -ed
huhuhu…i miss this place already..since i started working in makati di na ko makapunta dito….
this place is my midnight snack respite :)
yummmmmm!!
[…] Dinner at Breakfast at Antonio’s (what a mouthful!) was excellent, as usual. This place is still one of my all time favorite restaurants, no matter how overrated people claim it is. Maybe it’s because I always stick to their eggs when ordering and leave the tapsilog to places like SEx, and pancakes to Pancake House. […]

[…] Back to the topic at hand: Skipper’s Burgers, a fairly new burger restaurant (more of a diner I say). I really didn’t notice this diner before, although I pass by President’s Avenue every Friday. It’s easy to spot if you’re looking for it, especially if you’re coming from Sucat. It’s not that far from the highway: its near the shop where the bridal gowns are. As soon as you enter President’s Ave from Sucat, look to your left for a yellow sign with a kangaroo and the words Skipper’s Burgers. If you’ve reached SEx, lumampas ka na. It’s harder to spot if you’re coming from BF homes, because of the electric posts that block the sign (so that’s why I didn’t notice this place!). […]

buti naman so far lagi silang mabilis maglapag ng food sa harap namin, hehe… depende siguro sa dami ng tao. whenever i order my adsilog, wala pang ilang minuto, andyan na! sometimes i wonder if that’s a good thing, hehe… baka nakaupo lang ng matagal ang food dun, kaya ganun kabilis. :) but hey, masarap naman e, hehe. :)
Sobra po talagang masarap, mura at talagang express po ang service dito sa Sinangag Express….(bf branch) More power to Sinangag Express

This is the one and only institution that revolutionized the “TAPSILOG” tradition in the Philippines. It isn’t just a meal that all of us enjoy, but it has become a lifestyle that everyone lives with. Eat it for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and you’ll go home stuffed with the highest quality recipe of the famous TAPSILOG. But basically, Sinangag Express doesn’t just cater to those who live by the day, it actually gives the night owls the highest level of customer satisfaction. MASARAP KUMAIN PAG LASING! SA UULITIN!
