Cafe Deutschland - A tast of Germany in BF

currywurst

What a discovery this quaint resto/bar along Aguirre Ave was! My husband and I were asked to enter from the adjoining internet cafe, owned by the same person. It was a little funny entering a pitch black space with lots of monitors only to find ourselves in a cozy peach colored room with all of three tables and two booths. At the end was a small bar surrounded by happy German men (mostly middle-aged) chatting lively in their native Deutsch, beers in hand (or should I say bier?)

I was hesitant at first as I was the only girl aside from the waitresses, and the smoke wafting from the bar told me that it might get a bit uncomfortable to breathe later on, but knowing how my husband loves his schublig and wurst (different kinds of sausages), I thought what the hay!

It was quite an experience being the only Filipino customers sitting there, taking in the bits of pieces of German that we could pick up like the occasional “Warum?” (why?) in booming, low voices. Then we settled into a booth away from the aircon (which was quite cold) and looked at the menu which we were expecting to be pricey. We were pleasantly surprised to see the price range was quite affordable.

currywurst and goulash

Noel ordered Goulash (P125.00), Oettinger beer (P105.00), Currywurst (P162.00) and Rosti (180.00). He did right to order all authentic German fare, as they came out the way we remembered these things tasted when we lived in Germany a few months ourselves in 2003. Goulash is like a beef broth with beef cubes at the bottom; it was quite tasty and helped us warm up a bit. Currywurst is sausage with chili sauce on top which is usually served with fries on the side, as was our order. Rosti is like a thin cake made of crisp, fried potatoes. Their version was a bit heavy, so that was a bit of a disappointment.

baby prawns with garlic fried rice

My orders were non-traditional German choices such as Baby Prawns with Garlic Fried Rice on the side (P286.00) and Spaghetti Aglio Olio (Spaghetti in olive oil with garlic and chili peppers). As to be expected, these were not as expertly prepared as they are not commonly part of a German meal.

But boy were we stuffed and happy, all in all! By this time, our German friends by the bar had doubled in size and were already starting to belt out German songs mixed with some English words—we felt we were in a mini-Oktoberfest! :) We met the owner afterwards, a Mr. Mark Sauer, originally from Berlin. He was a very warm fellow who chatted with us for a while, and we found out that he’d been living in the Philippines for the past four years already, married to his half-Filipina/half-German wife.

So if you’re craving for a slice of Germany and missing it like we were, do stop by Cafe Deustchland. As the Germans say, auf wiedersehen!!! (goodbye!)

  1. My sibs and I have been here in our attempt to try new joints in BF.. and I was really intimidated by the Germans, the gloomy ambiance (you have to enter through the internet shop) and the fact that me and my sisters were the only girls there (other than the waitresses). We ended up moving to another resto. Well, its really a pub, and not conducive for family dinners pala..
