Siam Taste - The only taste of Thai in the South?

Sorry, this establishment is no longer operating. :(

Theres a sad dearth of Thai restaurants here in the South. There used to be one in BF, a long, long, looong time ago (plus points for anyone who remembers its nameit used to be located right next to Cardinal Ceramics), but its been closed for years and years now. My sister and I got all excited about the opening of Sawasdee Siam, before we realized it was a foot spa. What I wouldnt give to have a Soms open somewhere in BF (heck, theyre expanding anyway, so I might as well dream!).

Siam Taste in Festival Mall

Correct me if Im wrong, but now it seems that the only Thai restaurant in the South is Siam Taste in Festival Mall. Thankfully, they serve good, fairly affordable food. While theyre the Thai restaurant of choice by default, Id still eat here even if there were other options.

Last night we had a nice dinner for four here. We ordered some of the usual things one gets at any Thai restaurant: Green Chicken Curry and Siam Spring Rolls. No Bagoong Rice (incidentally, P158), Chicken Pandan (P189), Tom Yam soup (from P249 for the Chicken Hot Pot, with the Tom Yang Koong Hot Pot at P399), or Pad Thai (P158 for chicken, P189 for prawn) this outing though: well leave that for next time. Aside from the Thai classics, we also had some Brocolli with Oyster Sauce and Beef to share.

Their menu notes that each serving is big enough to share, and while the few dishes we ordered were enough for us all, the servings arent exactly huge. The Green Chicken Curry (P225) arrived rather impressively in a squash bowl (although some digging revealed that the bottom of the bowl wasnt cut too deep into the squash). The thick green gata-loaded sauce pretty much obscured the contents of the bowl, but there werent any whole chilies masquerading as harmless vegetables, so we had no get-me-some-water-my-mouth-is-on-fire casualties.

The curry was good: it was mildly spicy (just enough to warm your mouth but not to get you teary-eyed) and had a hint of sweetness. My father, who normally doesnt eat spicy food, enjoyed it, much to everyones surprise. Overall, Id say this is a great beginners curry (although its also pretty much awakened in me a craving for some really spicy eggplant-laden Soms curry).

Siam Spring Rolls

The Siam Spring Rolls were OK but not too creative by way of its fillings. At 128 bucks, this will make a decent pulutan-slash-meal for drinking buddies (and I know of at least two people who have their regular inuman sessions here right, Dahlin?) when the complimentary colored kropek runs out.

Ask for the complimentary technicolored kropek!

The Brocolli with Oyster Sauce and Beef (P198) had well-cooked veggies, with just the right amount of crunch to the broccoli. The beef was a bit tough, although it tasted pretty good; sort of like it had been marinated in beer.

And how did they fare against my perennial bottomless iced tea requirement? Pretty good: they have bottomless iced tea and lemonade for 55 bucks, but I had their yummy sweet Thai Iced Tea (P78) instead.

As for ambiance, the place looks like a cross between a bar and a restaurant, which is exactly what it is. I apologize to prospective drinkersI neglected to check how much the beer was (Denise Dahlin, could you help me out with this?).

All in all, Siam Taste has good food, reasonable prices, polite service, and pleasant ambiance. They also have free delivery and an area that can be closed off for more private functions. And, until our prayers are answered and a Soms or a Peoples Palace opens somewhere in the vicinity, its the only place to get your Thai food cravings assuaged.

  1. There used to be a small Thai restaurant along Aguirre Avenue, just after entering BF. It was named Katathani.
