On our next sojourn to a Japanese restaurant, Betty and I decided to check out Japs to Go, newly opened at the corner going to Concha Cruz of the Aguirre / Elizalde intersection (on the second floor of the Prime Bldg). I’d been asking Betty persistently if we could review this place; of the so many Jap restos in BF, this one seemed to beckon to me, perhaps because my impression of the place was you could get a meal for 50 bucks, 80 tops. It is, after all, named “Japs to Go”, with connotations of a quick fix with plenty of savory sauces. Alas, I was very disappointed to discover that meal prices started at P110, without a complementary drink.

As far as BF restos go, this place is on the expensive side. I had a Tonkatsu meal (P110), which wasn’t so bad, though I’m pretty sure I can get the same at Tenkai for more or less the same price, but with an authentic Japanese taste and vibe.

Betty had a California Maki (P125), and she made a remark that the roe on the sushi was not as good, nor as fresh, as the one at Tenkai. They did not have a Tamagoyaki. What they did have though was a nice windy spot overlooking Aguirre, great for drinking, and at P30/bottle, you cannot beat that.

The service was friendly but woefully inefficient; we were halfway through our meal before they started clearing off the debris from the previous diners, and they never got around to finishing the job. I couldve eaten off somebody elses plate and gotten a free meal if Id wanted to.

A friend once told me though that Pinoys cooked Japanese food better, having gone to Japan a number of times. I really don’t know about that, but I’m pretty sure this is exactly the place you should go to if you’re looking for safe Japanese food, though with their prices, I’d rather go to Tokyo Tokyo. At least I won’t be spending as much, and there’d be guards at SM if there were any errant Yakuza.

Tama ka, Nick. They ARE expensive! For those of you who recall, Japs to Go’s earlier incarnation was at the ground floor of Arrow Plaza (Geez, hope am getting the name of the building right!) (To the more visually acute, it’s the building in front of Chuwap, along President’s Avenue, near Tahanan Village.) Back then, the name Japs to Go really meant quick, cheap, to go meals - none of that fancy schmancy Japanese meals in red and black enameled bowls. Rice, tempura (or tonkatsu or what-have-you), Japanese “coleslaw” in a styro take-out container - all for less than P100! I mourned its demise for a while, hankering for their quick and satisfying meals, and was absolutely pleased as punch to discover that they “re-opened” at a new venue. While the food at the new location still retains its Japanese flavor - you can tell that they jacked up the prices to be able to subsidize their spanking new abode - complete with red lanterns and all :)
hey, i remember that! yan ba yung nasa building after the royal caribbean? well, higher rent, higher prices, i guess. :p
