What is it about the South, anyway? Why are we at Southbound rabidly pushing the South and its sites, sights and sounds? I could try to answer that question, but I wont yetIll wait for the readers to tell us why.
In the meantime, let me shatter the illusion a bit and say that while the South has its own priceless treasures, it certainly doesnt have everything. Thats why were featuring some places that make us say, Sana nasa South!

First on my list is Soms, a hole in the wall Thai restaurant in Makati, along the fringes of Rockwell. This place has already gained incredible prominence from word of mouth and blogging features alone.
In fact, its gotten so popular, theyve actually opened a branch along Reposo in Makati (which is huge, compared to the original store, which had plastic chairs and tables, complete with lawn umbrellas hanging in the trees, lined up outside the Rockwell gate).

The first time I ate at Soms, we were with Nicks band: there were around 8 of us, and the bill came to all of 610 bucks. I still have the receipt, a hastily scribbled breakdown of what we ordered, and proof that in their early days (before blog-generated fame and the Reposo branch), their extra rice sold for 2 pesos per order.

Nick had their mixed noodles, a heavy bowl of soup filled with all kinds of stuff, for 55 bucks.

I had their green chicken curry (which I always still order; P75 then, and for the life of me I cant remember how much it is now), which was good enough for two.

Denise ordered bagoong rice (no onions on their version!), also at P75, which was still a good value, although it was a bit skimpy on the meat.

I was thrilled to find out that they had Thai iced tea repacked in small mineral water bottles at 25 bucks apiece. Since then Ive been meaning to stock up on Thai iced tea for personal home consumption, though Ive never gotten around to it.

The prices have increased, of course, with the opening of the Reposo branch, but its still the same old Soms, and its always a treat to come here for dinner. When the mood strikes us, we trek to Rockwell gilid from Power Plant after a busy day of shopping.
Soms is one restaurant I would love to have within striking distance of home. I can see it now, a branch opening in BF, or along the friendship route, or, for maximum effect, in the garden of that long-standing shack by the corner of Madrigal and Alabang Zapote road, the shack thats sitting on so many millions worth of real estate. Now wouldnt that be absolutely fitting.
Som’s Noodle House
5921 Alger Street,
Poblacion, Makati (otherwise known as Rockwell gilid)
757-8079
Branch located at Reposo corner Milagros Streets (lemme verify this; could be Asuncion Street, but once you’re on Reposo, you won’t miss it anyway)
Their bagoong rice is still the best I’ve ever tried…
SSSSOOOMMMSSSS na tayoooo!! huhuhuhu!!
I like their version of shanghai…how do they call it? Toff, my son would do everything for a bowl of Tomyum…I agree, the bagoong rice is still the best!
Hey, we just ate at Som’s last Monday! :) It was Kidlat’s idea. First time for me and Yvette. Yvette had the Tom Yum, which she thoroughly enjoyed, and I had the bagoong rice, which was very good. And Denise — there was more meat with my serving. Maybe they were running low when you guys ate there… or maybe they read this blog, he he.
ha! i hope they do, hehe. that would mean we’ve done the world a service. :) more meat for som’s bagoong rice, hooray! next up, world peace! :)
ay ewan ko rin, like what I’ve said nung nagkita tayo recently, every time I eat the bagoong rice at SOMS (yun lang naman talaga ang kaya ko kainin dun e heheh) di ko nauubos..pero sarap…which brings me back to my pleaaa…SOMS NA TAYO BETNICK!!
Last Jan we went back to Phil and search for a good …. thaifood. Somebody told us that we could find one in Aigier St. So we headed their with my whole family and to my surprise the food really taste good thai food, esp.the so called padra-pao…i dont really remember the name but it”s a mix seafood and their bagoong rice. I even saw the familiar faces of abs-cbn people. The place is open air so i like it very much …Thanks to Som’s for making our day!!!!!

Eating at Som’s is a delightful, gastronomical experience that I would definitely repeat again and again. I promised my brother who will be vacationing here on Feb that I will bring him over to try out some yummy green curry chicken and Tom Yum Soup. I wish though that Som’s would open a branch in the South..
Hi! I’m wondering where they’re at in Reposo? I called Som’s (the one near Rockwell) and they said that they don’t have a branch in Reposo (the one who answered may not just be aware though).
