Coffeenista: More comments from the karaoke front

Here’s Nick’s take on Coffeenista. This time we came around for the food. Read the intro and my take on the place too. -ed

Coffeenista cafe, Karaoke bar, and pool hall

Coffeenista. Sounds like Communista. Or Sandinista. This coffee shops name makes one think its a meeting place for subversives in the south. It is, though, part of the club of small coffee shops that dare defy the big established names like Starbucks and Seattles Best. While I think Ive mentioned this before, I find the mere existence of these small establishments an indication of a healthy business climate.

Coffeenista has been around for a few years now. I always pass by this place on my way to BF Resort (its somewhere along J. Aguilar Avenue, commonly known as Casimiro or CAA Road). Betty and I have been there more than once, and Ive had the requisite coffee or tea. This time around we went for dinner. We just came from a run in Alabang Hills and I was aching for something filling. We were thinking of going somewhere reasonably priced, and Coffeenista came up. I do remember having tea for less than P50, a solid deal.

Coffeenista interiors

I remember having my warm drink in the karaoke area, furnished pleasantly and comfortably with an outdoor garden feel to it. This time around though it was occupied by a bunch of male nursing students, all on their way to inebriation, singing out of tune to some of the more irritating hits of the day. On another day we would have packed up and left, but with the endorphins running through our body and all, we decided to have a laugh of it, and stayed.

Coffeenista BLT

I ordered a beer (San Mig Light, P35) and a BLT sandwich (P60). Betty had a cold coffee drink which I found very good, (Iced Latte, P60) and pasta (Tuna Pasta, P90). While the beer tastes the same everywhere, I thought the BLT sandwich was something I could make in 2 minutes, and Im no cook. I found it dry, without the mayo and the pickles.

Tuna Pasta - their house specialty

The pasta I found a bit too adulterated, on the bitter side, like its on the verge of spoiling. Nothing happened to us though. Still, with their prices, you cannot make a mistake. I dont think any of their food went up to P100, so if you find anything amiss, just keep on ordering till you hit the mark.

excellent Iced Latte - and cheap too!

One more thing: Coffeenista is a terribly confused place. Having the karaoke bar is one odd thing, selling bags and other stationery in the coffee shop is another. It takes away the intimacy needed in a small caf. They also have a larger karaoke bar and a small pool hall near the entrance, though they do not encroach on the cafs space. But it does make one wonder what they intend to focus on. Maybe they should put more luvin on their BLT next time, and less karaoke.

  1. There should be zoning laws for singing flaws… But then again I guess Coffenista is far away from my pesonal space. I suppose I’m just referring to Karaoke and bad singing in general.

It sounds like Coffeenista’s still in its “confused infant identity crisis” stage where an establishment with no visible area of expertise dips its pen into different coloured inks hoping to find the right hue to use in order to leave a mark in the business world. I’d like to stick around and see if it’ll find a niche or start selling PX goods and haircuts.

  3. somewhere along caa road. if you’re coming from alabang zapote road, take a turn at jollibee casimiro (left turn if you’re coming from zapote, right from alabang). keep going past the plants on the right side; the store is on the right side after the bridge / bend in the road. if you reach the hospital or southville, you’ve gone too far. you can call the following numbers for more info: 0917-5329853(Marco); 0917-8106064(Meryl); 8745729; 8713451.

  4. When my husband and I were planning our wedding, we held our “meetings” at Coffeenista. I think the prices of their coffee is reasonable and I love their fashion & chismis magazine selection. After we’re done with our meeting, my husband and I would go into the other room for a round of videoke. After that, we would pay at the counter where I would sometimes be tempted to buy a bag or a wallet.

Unfortunately, we stopped going to Coffeenista because we were turned off by their high videoke rates. We celebrated our joint b-day party at Coffeenista just this year (for the 2nd time) and we were surprised when the billed arrived. I guess it was partly our fault for over extending our stay but as regular customers, we were hoping for a discount which, unfortunately, we didn’t get.

  5. i tried cuba libre in starmall with my family and it was fun! with the rate at P100 per head per hour na consumable, it’s soo sulit!(to think that one san mig light costs only P25!) song selection isn’t that vast but you would be surprised to realize that one hour went by already and there’s still a lot of songs in your reserve list.. it just smells of cigarette smoke the first time you enter the room but it fades away (or you become immune to it) once the cold air from the AC takes over.

    fun!
