We’ve got three takes on one of the hottest places in BF-Central BBQ Boy Grill! Here’s what I think… read on for Denise’ and Hanzel’s take too. -ed

You can pretty much tell a place in BF is jumping by looking at its parking lot. In its heyday, Raf’s pulled in a big crowd most nights; you could usually tell how cool the evening’s band was just by looking at the number of cars in the parking lot (and along the street). Same goes for the more obvious crowd-drawers, like Starbucks (prepare to double park) and Sinangag Express. It’s a simple rule of thumb: more cars, more customers. And the more customers there are, the better the chances that you’ve got a good place… after all, all those people can’t be wrong, can they?
Well, we reasoned, if that’s true, then Central BBQ Boy Grill must really be something. This place is the undisputed winner in the most-cars-lined-up-outside-sweepstakes. The place has a vacant lot next door which it uses as a parking lot, but pass by any night (and I do mean any night, including Sunday and the dreaded dead Thursday) and you’ll find lines of cars stretching out in all directions.
So one fine night Denise and I tried it out. It was a perfect night to do so, since Denise was hankering for some barbecue. Me, I don’t usually eat barbecue myself, but hey, I was willing to try it at least once. Besides, I figured there had to be something else on the menu I could order.

Indeed, it turned out there was a lot I could order: there was sisig (Pretty Boy!, P75), there was curry (Hellboy, P80), there were adobo flakes (no creative name for this one, P49), and there was my all time favorite, lechon kawali (P80). All the items on the menu had very witty names to boot. After sniggering at the Nangangamatis na Itlog ni Boy (salted egg with tomatoes and onions, P20), we decided to order that as well. Denise also had the requisite BBQ Boy (P15) and a stick of isaw (Vhong to the regulars, P10). In addition to my Boylet (that’s what the lechon kawali was called), I also had a BBQ Chick (P15).

It took forever to call somebody’s attention to get our order, and even longer before the food arrived. With so much time on our hands, we started playing with the condiments. First to come was my lechon kawali, freshly cooked and very crispy (you know how the fat dries up and becomes almost chicharon-like? It was like that, yum!). Next up was my chicken barbecue, which did not at all look as expected: instead of the inasal-type chicken piece skewered through, I got clean, sanitized little chicken cubes (taste wise it was pretty good though, and it saved me from having to simot the bones, which I am no good at anyway).

To add insult to Denise’s already injured sense of service, all her orders arrived last, which was kind of strange: if you’re a barbecue place, you naturally expect them to have barbecue lined up by the grill, ready to hand out like candy. Maybe they forgot to take the order, or maybe they ran out. Whatever the case, by the time the barbecue arrived, Denise was in no mood to be generous. Which was not good, since the little stick they served her didn’t redeem the guys at the grill. She found the isaw pretty good and clean though (syempre, Street Boy yata yun, hahaha) and she even managed to get me to take a leeeetle nibble.

So. Does the place deserve the long line of cars outside? Yes, I think it does. I would come here again, definitely with a group of friends in tow. The beach-like ambiance is very pleasant, the beer is reasonably priced (though not the cheapest in BF; P28 for SML and Pale, P30 for Pilsen), and the barbecue is only P15 a stick. They even have an Iced Cafe Mocha for 29 bucks (I plan to try this next time). You just have to know what to expect, is all. Come for the beer, the company (which you have to bring yourself), and for the smoky ambiance, and don’t expect too much in terms of service or gourmet food. You won’t be disappointed. Or, well, looking at Denise‘ maybe you will.

too many cooks spoil the broth :-p
haha oo nga, ayan nahanap ko na yung problema, sana balik na sa normal ang lahat.
jamie, no, the mothership wasn’t coming to get us… sigh. unpack your bags. hintay tayo uli. :)
central’s the best! they had a black party last saturday and a “stoplight” party coming up this month. please pm me if you’re interested to know when the stoplight party is. =)
what does one do at a stoplight party? :)
good news to the non-bf Central lovers..there’s a branch in east capitol drive, kapitolyo now :)
owned by my good friends roach and rinna
see you there!
dir: take shaw blvd, turn right at the petron rotonda, then left at the intersection after Bahay ni Juan resto. Watch out for the sign at the right side of the road.
hi daisy,
thanks for the update and the directions. ayus din sa kapitolyo, dami na stuff to explore, nadagdagan pa ng central. :) i’ve always wanted to eat at the middle eastern / indian restaurant there along pioneer. nandun pa ang warehouse ng powerbooks. hmmm… i should go there one of these days! ;)
This place is a real nuisance to all the residents nearby. I live a few houses away, and the owners and patrons are very inconsiderate. During weekends, the noise coming from this place is so loud…enough to rouse a person from a good night’s sleep. It’s no wonder this place was closed down in its original venue in BF. If it keeps up, it will only be a matter of time before it gets closed down again.
Buti na lang it’s rainy season now, there aren’t so many customers like in the past.
melvel,
i’ve always harbored a theory about why bars always seem to be a flash in the pan in bf; i guess this is why. it’s going to be a difficult act for them to maintain, balancing the nature of their business with the considerations that come with being a good neighbor. i am sam had the same problem, i think. still, i believe that there should be a way to balance commercial establishments near our homes without antagonizing anyone. we’ll see how things play out as time goes on.
They have a new branch at BF Resort now, right smack in BF Resort Drive! Just had bbq here tonight, yummy!
Is it true? Central in BF Pque is closed na daw?
meron na rin sila sa dona soledad diba? nadadaanan ko yun minsan eh.
yevka,
gosh, hindi ko pa maconfirm yun kasi i’ve been in calamba the past few days… will check tomorrow! :-O
chick,
yes, i think it’s part of cafe ne moso na.
ellen,
how does the bf resort branch compare to the one in bf pque? parang mas maliit ang lot tapos hindi kasing open, though i haven’t actually checked it out yet… nasisilip ko lang before i turn sa abel nosce pag dumadaan ako sa friendship route! ;)
i noticed bf bbq central and even laiya is closed since last week. what happened?
yes, closed na ang central and laiya… there’s a government announcement posted outside, which i haven’t read yet, but someone told me it’s because of “violations of barangay ordinances” daw. parang yung nangyari siguro sa i am sam dati… dami kasi nagrereklamo sa parking and ingay. i guess it’s really difficult to balance a popular restaurant (lots of parking and people) with a residential setting… but i keep hoping one day someone will be able to manage it… na may sikat na place that doesn’t antagonize the neighbors. i kinda miss all the cars when i drive by, parang lonely yung area na yun ngayon. but then again, i don’t live there, hehe.
guess what, i saw laiya and boy central at bf homes in operation again.
yes, we passed by last friday and they were both open… may konting pila na nga uli outside, though there was a baranggay patrol car there, watching and waiting too. ;)
New year, new nuisance. As one very irked and concerned resident, I hope the local government makes good its promise to close these establishments for good.
And Betty: There can never be harmony when the owners of these establishments are as inconsiderate as they come. For the record, these people DO NOT LIVE in BF, the owners reside in Multinational Village and Ayala Alabang. OK lang sa kanila na manggulo sa iba, kasi hindi nman sila doon nakatira.
The fact of the matter is, Aguirre Avenue is not a place where a beerhouse which closes at 3 am should be located. It’s a residential village, not a red light district.
melvel,
sigh… you know what? i agree with you. everytime i pass by bf now i get a bit sadder at the way it’s developing uncontrollably. i’m all for diversity and mixed use, but it has to be controlled, and the government and the associations have to handle it all with a firm hand. unfortunately, that’s not the way things are going, and there’s no reliable association to speak of anyway (another issue altogether). but then maybe it’s a pipe dream to believe that mixed use can be handled well in our country anyway.
you’ll notice that we’re trying to focus on more (for lack of a better word) positive establishments and activities recently… i hope that the nice, charming places manage to survive, while i share your hope that the nuisances be controlled, or at the very least zoned properly. i don’t think closing all the establishments indiscriminately is the solution, nor is it anymore possible. what we need is balance, and intelligent rules and regulations that are properly enforced.
to melvel — i personally know the owners of these establishments and while i cannot speak for LAIYA grill, i can guarantee you that the owners of CENTRAL are anything BUT inconsiderate. they have literally had to bend over backwards to address the concerns of their so-called “neighbors” (na sobrang layo naman sa kanila at mas malapit pa sa ibang establishments!!) pero no amount of providing enough parkers, parking space (FYI: central has the largest parking area among all establishments along aguirre!) and NO PARKING signs to these complainants (and even actually adjusting their operating hours!) can ever be enough to placate them. and do you know why? becoz what they want is to return Aguirre to a residential zone which, according to any lawyer you ask, WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
as for calling these establishments BEER HOUSES and referring to Aguirre as a “red light district”… obviously you’ve never been to either an actual beer house OR a red light district coz if you have, you wouldn’t be making such an erroneous comparison. so speak carefully about things which you do not know. =)
ps.
CENTRAL owns the lot that they stand on, so technically, they’re BF Homeowners too.
What’s Central”s landline? I’d like to inquire on their BBQ menu.
Thanks!
this place is not for everyone. yes, they serve cheap… everything. this could have been a nice place, but is usually a hangout for minors who are out of control, stupid frat boys and the likes.
quite frankly, i do not like the fact that central is inside bf homes. imagine getting the rear of your car hit by drunk drivers who came from central. and it happened twice in one night.
they should also hire more bouncers here. frat boys, the minors the the old ones re out of control.
hey guy from BF, if you really are from BF, why haven’t you noticed the other bars in the area that are just as full of drunk people?!! why single out just CENTRAL just because they seem to be the strongest contender in the bar category?!! i for one appreciate the fact that CENTRAL is one of the few establishments here who actually spend on security measures (bouncers don’t come cheap! and they have at least 3 on weekends!)
it’s not their fault that people from all ages flock there to have a good time…
and if you want to know what out of control kids really look like, try hanging out at PORCH!=)
I AM LOOKING FOR MR. BENJIE PALABRICA WITH REGARDS TO TAMARAW BEACH RESORT
