Diabetic Duo! Krispy Kreme and Cupcakes by Sonja

Cupcakes by Sonja at Serendra, Bonifacio Global City

I have this running debate with myself as to whether Fort Boni (more properly, Bonifacio Global City) is in the South or not. For the most part, I feel that it is: after all, Taguig is south of Makati (one easy way to split Metro Manila is to go north or south of Makati, which is right smack dab in the middle), and it’s easily accessed through the South Luzon Expressway via C5. The deciding factor, though, is that on weekends, we don’t think much of heading off to Serendra or Bonifacio High Street to find somewhere new to eat: going there isn’t a big production number.

Krispy Kreme

Still, since I’m not there every day, it’s always a treat to get pasalubong from the stores there, and by this, I refer only to one (or both!) of two things: donuts from Krispy Kreme, and cupcakes from Cupcakes by Sonja. Mostly it’s my sister who does the buying: whenever she’s in the area, she’ll pick up a box or two of diabetes-inducing treats. I’ve been known to confuse the two, telling her to get donuts when I mean cupcakes, and vice versa. This weekend I believe she’s gotten donuts. Yum. I can’t wait to go raid her refrigerator.

Cupcakes by Sonja

Krispy Kreme and Cupcakes by Sonja are perhaps two of the most talked (and blogged) about pastries on the market today. First there was the excited hype, then there was the backlash, with people complaining that both were way too expensive and not worth the sticker price or the long wait in line. I suppose we need not go to extremes here: we have our favorites (I particularly love Krispy Kreme’s New York Cheesecake and Sonja’s Bunny Huggers and Berries and Cream), but as much as we love them, when the line begins to snake out of the store, we take a miss.

Krispy Kreme New York Cheesecake

Price-wise, they aren’t cheap, but they aren’t really obscene, either. Krispy Kreme original glazed donuts are 30 bucks each, and the assorted varieties are 38 bucks each (check out the donut varieties on the Krispy Kreme website). I maintain that the most sulit ones are the ones with filling, like the New York Cheesecake and the Caramel Kreme Crunch.

free donut!

The kiasu among us will appreciate the free donut they give you while you’re standing in line; we like to joke that one can stand in line, order a drink, and make do with the free donut.

Sonja’s cupcakes range from 48 to 130 bucks. You don’t have to get the expensive ones to appreciate the cupcakes (the Bunny Huggers cost P55 and the Berries and Cream are P75 each), though the pricey ones are also worth it, *if* you’ve got the dough (no pun intended; the Melt in your Mouth Flourless Chocolate Cupcake, P98, is very good).

The thing to remember for both the donuts and the cupcakes is that you’ll definitely enjoy some variants more than the others (I know that’s really obvious, but I’ve heard people make sweeping statements based on one bite of something they didn’t like). Or you may not like them at all, in which case you just shouldn’t buy them (another duh, master of the obvious moment there).

Cupcakes by Sonja Bunny Huggers

I’ve found that the best way to try these is to get an assortment to share with friends and family: this way, you can cut them up into bite sized pieces and try a little of everything. When you know which ones you prefer, then you can go back and order just the ones you like. Or you can be adventurous and try something new every time, keeping in mind that famous Gumpism about life being like a box of chocolates: “You never know what you gonna get.”

  1. I tried Krispy Kreme and I have to say that I like their doughnuts better than Gonuts Donuts because the dough is softer to the bite. Shelling out P30 for a glazed doughnut is OK once in a while.

Same goes with Cupcakes by Sonyas. I consider it a treat so a couple of times or once a week would be OK. The only thing I HATE about Cupcakes is that they do not put it in their menu that the prices are exclusive of 10% service charge if it’s dine in. So magugulat ka with what you will pay because it’s more expensive than the price on the board. But if you order it for take out, there’s no addtl 10%.

  3. Kailan ba makakaroon ng Krispy Kremes sa South? I don’t mean South as in South of Makati. I’d love a branch at ATC or Festival. Personally, I don’t count BGC as South: If I have to pay the toll, for me, it’s not the South. But then, we have our own parameters, I guess I’m lazier than most, which is a pity because I love Serendra’s wide open spaces and selection of specialty restaurants and retail shops.

  4. kaoko,

that’s funny, a friend and i were just talking about taguig (fort in particular) and whether it can be considered south or not south. ;) she feels it’s even further than makati. on the way home from qc today i passed by c5 and figured, yeah, since you have to pay toll, then it makes it a bit less accessible than, say, town center or festival (especially festival, with its free parking). i have to admit, having an epass makes you a bit less sensitive to the toll; that is, until you get a low balance warning and have to reload!

so your observation about how we have our own parameters is spot on, and that can change for individuals too, especially depending on how tired / tamad to drive / nagtitipid sa gas we are. :) heehee.

that said, i agree: it would be great to have krispy kreme here… it would be perfect in westgate! :)

  5. I wasn’t very impressed with Cupcakes with Sonja with the cupcakes quite pricey pa, but anyways heard there’s a better set of cupcakes at See’s Goodies at Podium. Hope there’s a south branch so it can be featured here as well :) Would love to know what you guys think of it!

  7. Haven’t tried Sonja’s yet, but my sisters have. Then on my birthday, my sister bought me cupcakes from Brownies Unlimited (i think!), and they were rather good! And a lot cheaper too.

  10. my boyfriend and i really love sonja’s cupcakes! it’s really to die for. though it is located @ serendra and we lived @ las piñas we really find time to go and visit the place personally. the shop is so cute and lovely.plus the cupcakes are so tempting and it’s really sinfully delicious. (we really love the BERRIES and CREAM and the STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE flavors.) as well as the krispy kreme doughnuts. i’ll personally recommend th NEW YORK CHEESECAKE and SOUR CREAM flavors.

Sana both branches will open somewhere sa ATC or Festival Mall.

  11. Haven’t tried Sonja’s - are the famous the red velvet cupcakes from there or elsewhere? I think the Krispy Kreme and Go Nuts the cupcakes are really good! Hopefully they open branches at Alabang area soon.

  12. honey may,

yes, sonja is the one with the red velvet cupcakes. :) go nuts has a stall in town center and southmall, and a stand alone store in westgate. no kk or sonja’s branches yet though.

    leigh,

i think we have pretty much the same taste in cupcakes and donuts based on your recommendations. :)

  13. Krispy Kreme opened another store at SM MOA (this is a bonafide store-cum-bakery outlet, unlike the first which was more like a kiosk, albeit a big one)… and it has a drive-thru!!! It’s beside the Science Centrum.

But yeah, would be nice to have an outlet here in Alabang :-)

  14. Sonja’s are pricey, but are worth it. I go to Serendra just to buy them. The berries n cream are my favorite, as well as the one with the oreo topping (forgot what it’s called, haha.) :) I will however try the other cupcakes you posted.

  15. Hi Guys, a friend of mine who is on her 5th week of her pregnancy is craving for a box full of Krispy Kreme Doughnut…I totally agree on your request to have a small shop at either ATC/Festval Mall or Metrogate. We live here down south (Laguna) the closest we could go is MOA but the problem is its time consumming and very fuel ineficient. I do hope that they do also offer a delivery service to satisfy the cravings of Krispy Kreme doughnut fans down here. let us request Manny Villar to open up a branch of krispy Kreme doughnut shop here so we could all be happy.
