When I started writing this post on Go Nuts Donuts, I did a quick reconnaissance of similar articles already floating around the internet. I already expected the usual indignant comments about misplaced hysteria for something as simple as doughnuts. Recall, if you will, that when Go Nuts opened their doors around four years ago, they had the same impact that Krispy Kreme is having now; I can only imagine what opening day for Krispy Kreme in Greenhills will be like, what with a year’s supply of doughnuts up for grabs (you can hear ads on the radio and find details on Pinoy Food Photoblog).

What I found was a wellspring of strong sentiment both for and against Go Nuts stores, products, and customer service (Google it yourself and see what I’m talking about). In any case, Go Nuts has now settled into a sort of comfort zone where they’re no longer the hottest thing around, but they’re still safely on the radar, with stores and kiosks in malls all over the Metro.

My personal favorite is the Go Nuts store in Westgate: it’s large and roomy, and curbside parking is usually available. The extensive seating makes it possible to sit and linger, and to enjoy one of the less appreciated things that Go Nuts serves—a mean Cappuccino (P75 for small, P85 for a medium)!

They also have a bunch of specialty coffee, non coffee, and fruit flavored tea drinks (from P35 to P40 for the tea drinks, P80 to P110 for everything else).

The store is open from

The doughnuts, of course, are of the soft and sweet variety, similar to Krispy Kreme’s, but with gooier glazing. The doughnuts range in price from P18 to P28 each, and it’s really up to you to figure out which ones you prefer (I particularly like their new Black Forest Primadonut, which I feel is worth the price).

They also have Go Nuts Lite doughnuts, but I’m suspicious of fat free versions of obviously fatty foods, so I haven’t bothered to try these yet. (As a dear friend was once provoked to observe, how health conscious can you be if you’re ordering a chocolate glazed doughnut?)

Sure, there’s Dunkin Donuts and Mister Donut (posts about these on the way, since I do love Dunkin’s Bunwiches), but there aren’t very many stand alone stores to while long lazy days away in. And until Krispy Kreme opens in the South, this Go Nuts store will reign supreme.

they dont have my favorite donut anymore. :( lemon creme.
Yay for Bunwiches! Bunwiches, no matter how many years pass, are still the love. There’s magic with the bun. I love their BCT, kahit hindi crispy fried yung bacon, it’s yummy. And of course, no matter how much Krispy Kremes have brainwashed me, there will always be a place in my heart for Choco Honey Dipped, Choco Butternut & Strawberry filled.
Ay teka. Go Nuts nga pala tong post no? ^_^;;
For me, Go Nuts tastes better the next day (or even 2 days after) after being bought than Krispy Kreme. I only like KK when they’re hot and fresh.
So for me- KK when I can eat it fresh and hot and GN when I want it at home the next day.
kaoko,
haha, oo love ko din ang bunwich! i remember having bunwiches for lunch during my cash-strapped college days, in the philcoa and katipunan branches! ok na rin ang rise of the sosy doughnut, it makes you feel like you’re getting a really really good deal when you buy the usual P10 doughnuts. :)
ryan,
i guess depende sa variant… the cheesecake doughnuts from krispy kreme still stay yummy after days in the ref, whereas the hazelnut filled ones from go nuts have been known to become stale within an afternoon.
iya,
aw, shucks. i hate it when my favorite items get discontinued. :(
Betty,
I forgot to mention I was comparing the Original Glazed flavor of both shops.
Also, KK doesn’t have my favorite kind- a glazed strawberry jelly donut. They only have it in a powdered sugar-coated type just like in DD and MD.
ryan,
in that case, i absolutely agree… before KK opened in the philippines, the only ones i ever tried were the original glazed donuts which people flew home… i always wondered what the fuss was about. but when i tried the fresh ones (especially the free ones they hand out–free food is always extra yummy, haha!), ayun, naintindihan ko na rin.
hi betty!
I love donuts! When you wrote about Krispy Kreme, I had my husband (who was in Manila for the weekend) buy a box —
And now I want Gonuts! >_
haha lagot, basi sa amon mangakig husband mo, hehe. :) but yeah, it’s such a great thing to get doughnuts as pasalubong. i hope they were yummy and crave-worthy! :)
Betty,
Good to know that I’m not alone in my taste test. I also do the same as you- I eat the ones given out while in line and I eat the ones I buy at home. Its like robbing them blind in their own store!
hahaha yeah, think of it as taking back the overhead on their price. :) i suppose you’ll have to eat a looot of dougnuts in line before you can break even though. ;)
hey bets, ngayon lang ulit ako nag check ng southbound natin ah. still have a lot of articles for you. i love the choco cake doughnuts ng go nuts. madalas wala nga lang stock….:( i could 4 -6 pieces agad agad basta ung choco cake variant. :D:D
Try nuking KK Original Glazed for 14 seconds in the micro pag stale na. It lives again! Granted, nothing is as good as the freebies they hand out while you stand in line (I don’t know if it’s the freshness or the fact that it’s free) but nuking does wonders.
