Vibang’s Delight - Just add sand and water

Blue Marlin in Lemon Butter Sauce

Ano, walang beer?”

The waiter just shrugged his shoulders. So I guess this isn’t that kind of place.

Vibang's Delight

Vibang’s Delight does fool one on some levels. Tucked somewhere in the middle of the Las Pinas Friendship Route, the small kubo-type eatery looks more like it should be along the beaches of La Union… or maybe, just another place to unwind. Hence my confusion that Vibang’s might be a beer garden. It certainly looks so.

Vibang's Delight food counter

There was of course the absence of a few elements that should complete your average joe inuman: no videokes, no GROs, no bleary eyed men looking at you warily and fidgeting with their ominously black leather clutch bags. Instead, I witnessed families and wholesome couples eating there, obviously having come from just a few blocks away. Vibang’s, in my final analysis, is just another friendly neighborhood eatery, and if you’ve come for a little booze and a little bit excitement, you’re knocking on the wrong door.

Vibang's Delight Blue Marlin

now doesn't that look like pork chop to you?

Ok, so it’s not that typical. I don’t recall having gone to any carinderia and eating blue marlin. And it truly is blue marlin; we paid P100 bucks for just one piece, so that gives it a little bit of credibility. I will tell you though that the fish was good; we came there at around 8:30pm, so it was probably sitting in the chafing dish for at least two hours, and I think we had one of the last three pieces, but it still rocked. I liked the way the butter sauce put a little tang to it; I also dipped it in soy sauce, vinegar, and siling labuyo, and that was how I imagined fish should taste: soft, melts in your mouth, with a little bite.

Vibang's Delight Sinampalukang Manok

We also had broth from sinampalukang manok (the people there were just splitting hairs; call it what you want, to me it’s just sinigang na manok). Just the way I hoped it would taste; maasim, but only just. If I were still in UP, and I only had maybe fifteen bucks left for dinner, I’d have that and a cup of rice. That should do it for me. The soup would do well in any culinary milieu; meaning I wouldn’t be surprised if I had this at a five star hotel serving Pinoy food. So, should we keep Vibang’s a secret? Ok, ok, so maybe not. Bad for business.

you can buy fruits too!

There were other, more mundane choices at Vibang’s, like barbecue, and dinuguan, and I think I’ll venture to say that they were probably just as good. Being on a tight budget, we couldn’t have all of them, but just to give you an idea of how cheap it can get there, our piece of fish, plus 1 1/2 cups of rice, two small bowls of soup, and a Coke set us back for the princely sum of P130. Which means if we had something less pricey than the blue marlin, we’d probably have eaten there for free, I kid you not. Vibang’s also offers a good selection of fruit, and also fruit shakes of the regular variety, plus mais con hielo and other cold drinks of the like.

just like they do it at the beach...

So, if you want to do a little slumming, but feel you’re too afraid to go to the train tracks along Bicutan to grab a bite, or you just can’t let go of your Birkin, well, Vibang’s has to be the sosiest of all carinderias: safe, with good food and a pleasing clientele, you cannot go wrong. Now, if only the beach were nearby…

  1. i really enjoyed this place. it felt like something out of palawan, minus the sea air. i thought it was fun the way people lined up around the counter, plucked the lids off the chafing dishes, and peered inside. plus they had lots and lots of ice, which made the coke taste really really good. will definitely come back.

  2. Hey! Gio and I went to this place about 2 years ago. It was out of curiosity. We were taking his nieces and Nephews home (to citadella) then we happen to pass by this “glorified carenderia”. We decided to check it out coz we were thinking, ang daming koche na ka park so masarap siguro. It wasn’t bad….wasn’t able to try the marlin though….but the grilled liempo was really good.

  3. kakaaliw diba? si rv lagi din kaming sinasabihan dati na ok sya. :)

nick and i were talking about how you can probably eat here every day if you lived in the area… they probably change the ulam they sell, so it’s less nakakasawa than eating at a resto with a fixed menu every day. tapos lutong bahay pa. :)

  4. Kewl. I have a friend who lives along Abel Nosce. Will drag her there next time I visit her.

    Have I told you how much I love this blog? I guess it’s apparent with the way my comments keep showing up. ^_^;;

  6. Oh so you finally found it Betts! A lil trivia about THE Vibang’s. Do you know that it is actually managed by the family…frm dad to the kids. The daughter and son take turn in manning the resto. They were both good looking and obviously well mannered and responsible. It’s just a novelty for me to see a young beauty and a young hunk helping out…hands on huh. I also gathered from the mom that they pray as a family before they open the resto and after they have closed it. hmmmm baka kaya sarap food nila….punta tayo dyan nila Aweng and shawie!

    maam wria,

yes we finally tried it out! sarap! and yeah, i think i saw the son that you’re referring to… kasi may “young hunk” na nagbibilang ng pera behind the counter! (ayan, i used your words para hindi sabihin ni nick na kung sinu sino tinitingnan ko, ahahaha!!! but credit where credit is due, after all… ;) )

  8. ang lapit-lapit lang nito sa amin (think one street away) but i haven’t tried it pa.. or siguro likas na matipid ako at kakain na lang at home rather than walk and pay for “home-cooked” meal.. hehe :) sige na nga, i’ll try this when i don’t like the ulam :) galeng ng write up mo e :)

  13. Hi sir! Uhm, no suggestions really, or any negative comments, we like the beach house feel of vibang’s delight. The food is excellent. I’d actually suggest that YOU DON’T CHANGE ANYTHING!!! Unless of course you plan to expand, which is a different thing altogether, but no, Vibang’s is perfect. Thanks for reading this blog.

  17. With the advent of fastfoods, Vibangs would definitely the best alternative for Las Pineros! I had eaten here 3x and had taken out their food once! Everything is definitely MASARAP!
My mother’s friend from Gloria Diaz St. in BF introduced us to this place. Some of the staff recognizes them!
The suggestion of candles is an alternative in getting rid of the mosquitoes or the ultraviolet thing hanging in most restaurants!
I suggest that a guard also be hired since I had heard that somebody’s laptop was stolen while being parked in the vicinity!
But definitely, Congratulations to the owners for making life easier for most Las Pineros! I hope you can open earlier on Sundays because we usually go to church early and wants to eat earlier and avoid the crowd.

  25. Just wondering: Since I’ve been lucky enough to always have stickers and know at least one person from the many villages in LP, how are these places marketed? I am assuming “for villagers” only ito or… wait, forget it, I guess one can take the jeepney or tricycle the goes in the village to enjoy such meal, that is, kung ayaw mong mag iwan ng ID. heee heee. Forget my comment, I guess I answered my own query.

I’ll try this next time I visit.. kakamiss ang Blue Marlin.
