North Park in South Supermarket - The secret is out!

North Park

In the Harry Potter universe, when a place is under the Fidelius Charm, you can pass right by it and not know it’s there—that is, until the secret keeper tells you about it. Well, I had my very own secret keeper revelation the other day, when my sister pointed out to me that there was actually a branch of North Park in South Supermarket in Filinvest. All this time I’d been shopping there, enjoying the stores lined outside the building (among which are Kitaro, Yellow Cab, Pancake House, Teriyaki Boy, and Mercury Drug; there also used to be a tiny National Bookstore), I’d glossed over the North Park, not so much because anyone had tried to keep the location hidden, but because I’ve never been a big fan of Chinese food. Still, if my sister (another reluctant Chinese food eater) was badgering me to eat here, I reckoned it must be worth a try.

Turns out I did learn a useful secret after all. Unlike the frequently overflowing branch in Town Center (which is a good thing for the owners, but not necessarily a good thing for someone looking for a quiet, peaceful meal), the North Park in South Supermarket is comfortably occupied: there’s a constant stream of diners, but it never gets too full, and the seats and booths are pleasantly planned. It’s also open up to midnight, which lets you take care of any late night dimsum cravings. [Newsflash! Our intrepid on the ground reporter (let’s call him Mr. X) has just discovered that this branch no longer stays open until midnight… after spending a whole drive from Makati eagerly anticipating a late night meal to celebrate the Chinese New Year. We’ll find out what their official hours are as soon as we get in… our hungry (and frustrated) Mr. X is camped out in front even as we speak, hehehe. -ed]

Northpark Siomai

North Park Pinsec Frito

North Park Century Egg and Jelly Fish Salad

For starters, we ordered some Siomai, Pinsec Frito, and Century Egg and Jelly Fish Salad. The Siomai (P65 for 4 pieces) was fine but rather unremarkable (or maybe that’s just to a dimsum novice like me). The Pinsec Frito (P60 for four pieces, P93 for 8 pieces) was very good, with its extra crunchy wrapper, and (evil!) fatty filling. The Century Egg, sitting in a rather large nest of Jelly Fish Salad (P137), was enough to fill me up way before we got around to ordering the main course.

North Park Yang Chow Fried Rice

Sated, we scaled down our main course order to a serving of Yang Chow Fried Rice (P110) and two of their signature dishes: Fried Beancurd Skin with Shitake Mushroom in Oyster Sauce (P102), and Salted Garlic Squid (P137).

North Park Fried Beancurd Skin with Shitake Mushroom in Oyster Sauce

It was the first time I’d tried anything like the beancurd, which put me in mind of wood shavings (though they were very yummy wood shavings, mind you). This would make a good appetizer or solo vegetarian snack, especially for its price; mushroom fiend that I am, I was also sorely tempted to order the 3 Kinds Mushroom with Broccoli in Oyster Sauce (P88), but I was already too full from the jelly fish. The squid was excellent, with large, soft pieces of meat, interspersed with spicy bits of green chili.

North Park Salted Garlic Squid

I realize now why this place is so popular: it’s simple and unassuming, but the food is good and inexpensive (very few menu items are more than 200 bucks). It almost feels like you’re eating at home, a sensation reinforced by the fact that you can order 500ml bottles of Coke to share (reminds me so much of my college days). Well, well… thanks to the secret keeper, it seems my Chinese food repertoire is slowly growing.

  1. Plus, the ATC branch’s service is turning from bad to worse. I mean, how long can it take to remove a siopao from the steamer and slip it in a paperbag? Appalling!

Kung di ko lang mahal yung Asado Pao nila e. *sob sob*

  2. hubby and i have yet to be happy ever with a visit here. ewan k ba, maybe we just ordered the wrong items on the menu… di namin talaga like timpla nila.
but i give A for presentation naman. pati ambiance.
after your blog entry, i just might give it another try. :-)

  3. hi kaoko!

try the one in south, there are a lot less people, so the service is more attentive. kaso na double bill nila kami for the pinsec frito. tinanggal naman nila agad, but if you’re the sort of person who doesn’t review your bill… :( all in all it was a pleasant dinner anyway.

    gita,

i’m not any kind of an authority on chinese food, haha, although since i found the food good, when i don’t usually like it… i guess that’s a good thing! :)

  4. we dine there last night after my bf and i attended the mass in festival mall. Yes, it is cozy and di masyado matao unlike their other branches. Their crew is also attentive. Though we only had yang chow, lechon macau and siomai, we delicously had fun eating there. Hope you could also feature some of the food/restos in Alabang like Leslie’s,Bangus, etc

  5. i ate there last week. i had no complaints about the service nor the food…except for the fact that they had a mouse walking around the resto while i was eating…

it kinda made me lose my appetite since i am deathly afraid of rodents.

  8. liee!!!

    mango tapioca sounds good. :)

the boy and i subsist on chow mein and mango tapioca, with some other additional items whenever we feel like it, like the yang chow fried rice (may noodles na nga tapos may rice pa eh no?) or whatever else.

    ay nagugutom ako :-/

  10. You’re right, the ambience at their ATC branch is shot.

I love their crispy noodles though, and their gabi buchi.

  12. Glad to know we weren’t the only people getting bad service in their Town branch. We had a long list of complaints last time, all basically a variation on their bad service (or none at all). We even told the manager about it.

But since I am a sucker for cheap eats (and I’m not a big fan of the cuisine), I always find myself eating here. Next time you go there, try the Lemon Chicken, goes perfectly with the Crispy Vinegared Tofu (which is not at all crispy, since it’s swimming in vinegar). Then if you’re the type who can’t live without the carbs, get their Wanton and Nanking Beef Noodles (Hongkong style noodles). I can finish everything by myself.

I really wish they do something about their service though.

  13. json and patricia,

the branch in south super has good service naman… if you get fed up with the atc branch, you can always try it there. funny how we still stick to some places even if the service grates… i guess the appeal goes beyond that. :)

    kim rose,

aw, no prawns, too bad. :( it’s a good thing they have lots and lots of other options. :)
