Guzzie’s Carwash and Auto Detailing - Bringing me out of the Dirty South

finally, a clean car, courtesy of Guzzie's

Ive been planning to have Southbound car stickers made for some time now. Only I dont think Ill be using them on my car: its so dirty, it hardly seems like an appropriate ambassador for the site. So Ive been toying with the idea of a sticker that reads, Welcome to the Dirty South instead (if you want one for yourself, let me know, so I can have multiple copies made, hehe). That, at least, is more in keeping with the character (and appearance) of my car.

before...

Just last week, however, I had the rudest shock of my life, which made me reconsider the wisdom (or foolishness, rather) of keeping my car as filthy as it was (check out my before and after pictures to appreciate the amount of dirt involved). Id always maintained that a dirty car was, to use a vernacular phrase, hindi mainit sa mata (ie, a less likely target for theft or anything more harmful than a couple of Wash me messages scribbled into the dust). Unfortunately, in keeping away vermin of the human kind, I was also possibly attracting the non-human kind instead. (The whole story is gross and reflects badly upon me, haha. Suffice it to say I had a sneak preview of Ratatouille played out on my hood.)

...and after!

Enlightened, I headed off to have my car cleaned thoroughly, inside and out. I figured I had to have the job done right, so I decided to go to Guzzies, that unbelievably popular car wash along St. Joseph Avenue, the street connecting the main arteries of BF Almanza and Pilar Village. This place is constantly full, especially during weekends and late at night, with all sorts of cars, from lovingly maintained older models, to brand-spanking-new ones. Id always been a bit embarrassed to bring my ratty old vehicle here (it would have seemed so out of place next to the sparkling clean BMWs, what with its peeling paint and rusty roof), but desperate times call for drastic measures, so here I was.

oh, finally a bath, he said...

I asked for a basic wash and vacuum (P80 for small cars, around P130 for a CRV-sized vehicle, up to P180 for an Expedition), and for good measure, an engine wash as well (another P200, well worth it). We watched them work their magic seated on benches outside Guzzies Store (drinks and basic junk food while you wait!). There was also a small waiting area with a television, but we decided to stay outside and gawk at the rivers of dirt flowing from my car instead.

Now I really wouldnt know anything about this stuff, but I was terribly impressed with their efficiency and attention to detail. They had the process all worked out, with one side of the compound for washing, and the other side (across the road) for drying, waxing, buffing, and vacuuming. Armed with all sorts of vacuum cleaners and brushes, they made my car, well, decent again. They obviously know what theyre doing, and theyre good at it too: my brother in law has stories of the time they came back from a long trip in Ilocos; the owner looked at the accumulated grime on their car and pronounced theyd been out of town (she instructed her staff to get the clay off before getting the car wet to avoid scratching the finish, or something like that). They do detailing as well, which will run around P2,500 (for interior detailing; another P2,500 for the exterior) for a small car like mine. Inspired, I make a vowwell, scratch that, just a mental noteto have the car cleaned regularly from now on.

  1. Can you recommend a good car wash place in BF Homes, Pque or in Alabang?

  2. hi maan,

guzzies, the place featured here, is really popular, and the service is really good. sobrang thorough sila maglinis! i think there’s also a meguiar’s in bf, which should have the same level of service. as for the smaller operations, i’m not too sure, since i haven’t tried those yet. since this incident where the car smelled like panis na sisig after it was washed (may sisigan kasi dun sa car wash), dun na ako sa sigurado, haha.

    does anyone else have recommendations?

  3. You can try Go Car near Sinangag Express along President’s Avenue.

As for the sticker design, may I suggest palm trees as part of the design? Something similar to the South of Manila (SOMA) t-shirt from Team Manila.

  5. Hi Betty,

I spoke to one of the gals at their old location sa may Ecoville and they said that they can re-print a retired shirt, yun nga lang kailangan ata least 50 shirts ang o-orderin. Maybe if we gather enough interest in the shirt eh pwede tayong mag-order kahit 20 shirts lang.

  6. aha! is that so?!?! hmmm… sige i think i’ll talk to them about bringing that shirt out of retirement. :) anyone else interested? :)

  9. Dirty South kinda sounds too “hip-hop” ata. Maybe we can have people give suggestions for a new South catch phrase para maiba naman. Hehehe.

  10. Yeah, it kinda does but the south is known as the dirty south (some with double Rs pa, hehe). But something new, catchy & unique would be nice.

“Southbound” is great also - gives out the message that you’re going home.ü And to most of us, it is where home is.ü

  11. well, we can always run a bunch of “classic” south stickers na iba iba ang theme, examples of which (all found on friendster) are:

the dirty south (tama si caryl, minsan the dirrrrty south pa nga, for emphasis, haha)
    southern comfort
southside (haha, ito ang talagang hiphop, but watch out, we’re coming out with something connected with this name soon!)
    and soma.

that’s a great observation, caryl! oo nga, southbound does equate to being homebound. :) my sister came up with the name, which also means a lot of things on different levels:

southbound as in the southbound lane on slex (like caryl said, this means going home!!!),
bound as in the boundaries of our self-made region (most obviously muntiparlas, but steadily growing to encompass places further south as well),
being bound together as a community,
and, hopefully if we manage to pull the community together for the common good, bound as in progress in leaps and bounds. :)

i’m sure we’ll come up with something new and totally unique soon enough… hmmm… baka dapat magpacontest tayo! ;)

  17. this is where i get my car washed also (it’s so accessible since i live in Pilar).

They do a really good “pulido”job when they wash my car.

  18. Nice. Just out of curiousity, where do they get all that water from? My aunt lives on Concha Cruz in BF, and water is so scarce that she is actually contemplating on moving out to Ayala soon. But anyway, I love how you described your feeling when having your carwash beside those BMWs. I felt the same when I took my old Sentra in, it used to be a shiny metallic-greenish color… now it’s just metallic-looking so I call her “stainless”… hee hee. I take her to the carwash only when I am too lazy to do it myself (or when I muster up enough courage to swallow my pride). Love my car though, it’s been my ride and will always be. Sadly I only see her once a year since I live here in the states.
