Checking out Paseo de Sta. Rosa - Kokomo and Babycakes

Kokomo in Paseo de Sta. Rosa

Heres a little experiment: instead of my usual verbose post, Im trying to be short and snappy (with the small exception of this intro, of course). I expect this to read like a bunch of notes scribbled onto a paper napkin, but I figure it may also be one of the best ways to get my thoughts and experiences out on paper (or out in cyberspace): most of the time, you see, I sit on posts about new places Ive tried until something percolates and starts to write itself. Which means that by the time my experiences find their way onto Southbound, theyre a few dayseven weeks (sometimes months, hehe)stale. Ive got tons of places lined up for you guys to read about (including recent provincial trips to Laguna and Batangas), reports of newly opened stores (like Brazil Brazil and DiMark’s in Town), and shoutouts about old favorites (the return of Twister Fries, for example). While the ol OC me prefers to write about these things properly, I will suppress the urge to write novellas for each post and just try to get the info out on Southbound as fast as I can. Let me know if it works (you gotta love the freedom of blogging; I wouldnt dare do this with print). OK, OK, Ill stop yapping now here goes:

Babycakes in Paseo de Sta. Rosa

When: A lazy Saturday afternoon, just last weekend

Who: Me and college pal AJ, kaladkarin extraordinaire (especially now that hes got a new set of wheels)

Where: Paseo de Sta. Rosa, a happy cross between city mall and provincial mall (reminds me US outlet stores in the middle of nowhere, and, strangely, Sta. Lucia East, hahaha)

inside Kokomo

What: Places that can only be found here: supposed to try out Kanin Club (lots of good recommendations!), but arrived late in the day, so ended up having lunch (at 3 in the afternoon) in Kokomo and coffee in Babycakes Sweet Surprises instead. Also found a store called Bags-E (I think; they didnt have a proper sign yet) selling pretty dresses for little girls that had just opened that day (forgot to take pictures of really cute brown dress with blue polka dots).

Kokomo Lechon Kawali

Kokomo pleasant enough, but nothing spectacular. Reminded me of restaurant at PCED in UP, company guesthouses, and corporate canteens the world over. Lenchon Kawali (P155, and really, the menu and the receipt said Lenchon) had lots of meat versus fat, so was kinda dry (probably a good thing, but since I ate the crispy fat edges, negated all potential cholesterol savings).

Kokomo Java Rice

Cancelled my plain rice when AJ’s Java Rice (P30) proved good enough for two.

Kokomo Sizzling Pusit

AJ ordered Sizzling Pusit (P155), which wasnt sizzling so much as saucy; mostly tentacles instead of rings, rather spicy.

Kokomo Green Mango Shake

Had Green Mango Shake (P65), very good, no hairy stuff from the seed in it, just the right amount of sweetness. Altogether reasonably priced food.

Babycakes mini cakes

Babycakes Sweet Surprises served cakes but we were too stuffed to try any; ordered tea and coffee (Cappuccino, P50) to melt Lechon Kawali fat instead. Buckled and bought a chocolate chip cookie which tasted fine but was hard as a rock.

Babycakes Cappuccino

Really nice all American interiors (complete with good ol boy John Mayer singing in the background) and cozy wood tables and benches. Lots of magazines to amuse ourselves with (AJ had some hot sporty chick staring at him from the table for some time). Friendly staff. Bunch of kids came in after we did and ordered nachos (Nachos Overload, P95); store smelled tantalizingly of cumin and all sorts of spices while it was cooking.

the Babycakes counter

Coming back here soon for that elusive meal at Kanin Club. Also for cheap Reef slippers (around 300 or 400 bucks, if memory serves) and discounted trainers. Hopefully store we discovered will have ladies clothes by then. National Bookstore opening soon too not that its a uniquely Sta. Rosa thing, but its always fun to browse in National.

  5. Betty! Paano pumunta sa Paseo de Sta. Rosa? By any chance meron bang store there called JWave? It’s your typical Japanese homewares store, ala daiso and japan home. Favorite bento store ko kasi dati yun sa waltermart pasong tamo, sabi nila lilipat sila sa Sta. Rosa but I never found out where.

  6. chrissie!

hmmm… i’m not sure how to commute there, but i guess you take a jeep going to balibago. baba ka right after the exit (kasi the balibago jeep turns left and you need to go right), sa may coke plant. then you either ride a jeep (don’t know where they’re going, baka silang) or a tricycle. tuloy tuloy lang naman yun, on the same road going to tagaytay. baba ka lang when you see paseo de sta rosa na, it’s across the road from the caltex at the corner with the stop light.

yeh. hanep ba sa directions? :)

i used to have a list of all the establishments in paseo de sta rosa, but i can’t figure out where i wrote it. haaay naku, matanda na. in any case, there’s a new japanese/korean grocery sa likod banda, in the building with brother’s burger.

  10. Kanin Club is where most people go in Paseo de Santa Rosa. They serve lunch and dinner. Close after lunch.
The outlet store for rubber shoes is also found here. There is also a cute bakeshop. I think this is the one we entered wherein there are cute figurines of grandma and grandpa!
The place is like another version of Alabang Town Center!

  13. to kaoko: there’s a japan homes store in walter mart sta. rosa. This is located before Enchanted Kingdom.

You may also like to listen to the music at Michael’s RACS every TUESDAY (father and son duo called MASID) and THURSDAY (band of 4 friends called LAGUNA JAM). All easy listening music. You can also jam along with these two acoustic bands. Love ‘em… Love ‘em … Love ‘em… ANG GuGWAPO pa!!!
