We’ve done a number of posts recently on original locations of Filipino food favorites, though for the famous

Chicken inasal has come a long way, what with inasal chains and Juday-endorsed recipes. Still, for me, nothing beats the taste of what I consider the original chicken inasal restaurant in

Bacolod Chicken House’s menu used to consist of a simple list of chicken body parts in Ilonggo: paa (thigh), pecho (breast), pakpak (wing), atay (liver), isol (a…, er, tail), and baticolon (hmmm… gizzard? Intestine? Innards? Don’t ask me, I don’t eat this stuff). That was the extent of your choices, along with an option for plain or garlic rice (oh, and the usual batchoy, pansit molo, puto and dinuguan, of course). Now they have things like spare ribs, ensaladang talong and adobong kangkong (hey, I made a rhyme!), but for the most part, the menu has stayed simple, uncomplicated, and very reassuring.

While variety is not particularly a virtue here, consistency is. The chicken looks and tastes pretty much the way it did in my youth (and thankfully, in recent times, I haven’t come across the usual undercooked pecho, perhaps one good thing coming from the reduction in size of their chicken parts—the other good thing being the vague assurance that at least they’re not using GMO chickens): slightly singed (sometimes outright burned) skin, distinctly yellow-orange tinged meat, and a sharp tangy taste, perfectly accompanied by a mixture of toyo and sinamak (vinegar loaded with all sorts of stuff).

Prices have probably changed, but not by much—you can still get a full meal for a hundred and fifty bucks flat: P89 for the chicken (I always get the pecho, good value with a wing attached), P23 for the garlic rice (with toasty little bits of garlic sprinkled on top), and P38 for the softdrinks (ah, that’s where they hit you hard). This is one place where, strangely, I seldom feel the need to have dessert—I love the taste of garlic in my mouth—but if I do want some, there are the usual sweet Pinoy suspects—leche flan, sago’t gulaman, and mais con yelo (all desserts around 50 bucks).

Despite the newer chains which offer all sorts of dishes, I find myself terribly loyal to Bacolod Chicken House, for the simple reason that their chicken tastes best. Of course, all the associated memories help too. But hey, you don’t need to have grown up in some far flung corner of the country to enjoy this stuff—thankfully, there’s one in BF, and it looks like its here to stay.

i agree. bacolod chicken house is the best inasal. and the original, diba?
if im not mistaken, the first ever of its restaurants is the one in Aduana St, in Manila. near Manila Cathedral, right? thats where I used to eat this. it was right across from my dad’s office.
we were supposed to have lunch there last sunda, kaya lang sarado. too bad….
anyway, good thing there is the much nearer BF branch.
yeah i agree is still the original,
theres also one near BF in Santana Grove (beside Shopwise Sucat) Bacolod Chk-n-Bbq House, owned by her son, who along with his sisters, continued their familys tradition of the original bacolod delicacy..
yum! comfort food!
i love their molo. :)
I just have to say that we just had dinner there and no place in the Metro ever makes inasal as good as Bacolod Chicken House in BF! Wow! I grew up with this. :)
It’s been a while since I last went here. Years actually. This is where they also serve the chicken skin right? I loved crushing the crisp chicken skin over my rice and eating it with the inasal (with spicy vinegar). I used to love this restaurant years ago and your post made me miss it a lot now. I’ve never been to the BF branch though. North areas lang usually.
yeah, there a number of other branches all over manila… i didn’t realize the first one was near manila cathedral though! i have fond memories of the one along ma– something, the road connecting kalayaan and east ave, the one near the heart center. there also used to be one at the end of katipunan, near the mini golf course (from years and years ago), then they moved to above full house, then i think nasunog sila. aw. :(
usual conversation in my family:
dad: san niyo gusto kumain?
me: shakeys!
dad: ayoko don, puro tinapay lang.
bro: hen lin!
dad: vetsin?!
mom: chicken bacolod?
dad: ayon, ok dyan.
that restaurant has seen my family grow from scabby kneed kids to teenagers to young parents :p it’s the place to be!
I beg to differ… Why? Because, I have been a chef all my life and with all honesty, preparing chicken the way the people in Bacolod Chicken Inasal does, id would have to say it’s world-class… truly impressive. I could be in a cruise to the carribean islands or in the kitchen of one of the most famous restaurant in Paris, but still nothing beats the sumptuous chicken recipe of Bacolod Chicken Inasal… It’s something that would long linger in your mouth after having one. That kind of feeling where you seem you can’t get enough… Even describing the whole feeling of having to taste one makes me hungry :) Don’t just trust me with this one.. you really have to taste it, in a heart-beat i know you’d get hooked as well. They have branches at malls like Glorietta and Robinsons Place Manila, even near Bel Air at Jupiter Street Makati.. just to name a few. It’s almost the Christmas Season, you have every reason to enjoy all the finest things in life… You can start that by bringing your family to the nearest Bacolod Chicken Inasal.. after that, I’m pretty sure you’d come back.. hungry for more… Enjoy :)
Most probably the “chicken inasal” recipe of Bacolod Chicken Inasal doesn’t just come with the literal ingredients and secret spices… It prolly takes passion and dedication to perfect that masterpiece. Something that would only be thought of by someone who wants to bring the “authenticity of the original inasal na manok” to every dinner table of every Pinoy (more specifically those that are not near Bacolod or Iloilo). It was probably a long-time dream, that is now slowly becoming a reality. Imagine the comfort of having to enjoy an “inasal na manok” right there on your own dinner table… or being served by polite waiters or waitresses at your favorite mall (glorietta for example). Life is simple and short, that’s why we should enjoy every second of it to the fullest,so from the bottom of my heart i would like to thank Bacolod Chicken Inasal for making life easier and sweeter.. Thanx for bringing us closer to the pride of “Bacolod/Iloilo”….the chicken inasal :) God Speed

Dude you forget to mention Bacolod Chicken Inasal. :D
Nice one there Sundel. When it comes to inasal I also go for Bacolod Chicken Inasal.
actually the best here in bacolod is manokan country and bacolod chicken house…
I’m not really particular ’bout the resto but I like Bacolod Chicken Inasal.
Hi there.
As a kid, I practically grew up on chicken inasal. Baon ko yan sa school. You should try FRIED CHICKEN INASAL too. hehehe. it was the fastest way my mom could prepare it in the morning para pambaon namin sa school. All of us (6)kids were trained to make the mix and even served in our restaurant straight from school. I’d make the mix, marinate the chicken, go to school and see the happy and satisfied customers at night.
Today I’m not all that happy with how the way Chicken Inasal is prepared and done. It’s however understandable due to our FAST FOOD mentality; I WANT MY FOOD NOW! One thing that I’d like to share and I’m sure our chef friends here would agree that good food takes time to prepare.
The BEST thing about Chicken Inasal? It’s one food that has RECALL! From it’s smell, taste, and texture. I mean it’s more likely that you’ll be able to recall the taste and even distinct smell of an original chicken inasal over a (no offense meant) Kenny Roger’s Chicken, right?
It’s just amazing!
Here’s a little secret I’d like to share with you on how to really enjoy your chicken inasal:
the SAWSAWAN MIX:
-2 pieces of kalamansi (ASK FOR IT & THEY WILL SERVE IT!)
-lots of SINAMAK
-and just a LITTLE of TOYO.
Please Try and you will not regret It!!!
BACOLOD CHICKEN HOUSE and MANOKAN COUNTRY are the closest you’ll ever get to having the ORIGINAL CHICKEN INASAL.
Just a brief story about its history. Chicken Inasal was made popular in Bacolod City along the City Plaza sold in small stalls outside a movie house (State Theater). It eventually grew and became known as MANOKAN COUNTRY where, before it was moved to the reclamation area, my mom and the rest of her relatives all had stalls selling Chicken Inasal. When my mom got married and started a family with my dad, she did not want us kids to grow up in the manokan country environment. In the late 70’s, my mom, ELISA VELEZ GARRUCHO put up the 1st Bacolod Chicken House in San Sebastian street, Bacolod City. A few years after that, her sister NENA VELEZ also put up her own restaurant which also became popular, NENA’S.
If you were to go to manokan country today, you will notice that the names of the establishments there revolve around the VELEZ clan.
Bacolod Chicken house was eventually sold to the CAJILI Family where they managed it very well and branched out in manila.
As for my mom and its original recipe today… that’s something to look forward to VERY SOON.
yummmyy!!!
…and oh this I have to add.
The best way to eat chicken inasal is WITH YOUR BARE HANDS! KAMAYAN!
:)
NENA’s1 Chicken Inasal located in Manokan Country, Bacolod City.
Simply the BEST!
Guys, try also the chicken inasal of Mang Inasal, thay have branch at MOA where i’ve tasted 1st, their version of it and its kinda impressive too as well as the price its much cheaper than the Bacolod Chicken Inasal & the other one w/c had the green logo not the one endorsed by juday i think its the Chk’s bacolod inasal need to check it, its along araneta center along shopwise and also the one in marquinton marikina, so whenever im in moa, ill make sure to have my lunch or dinner there. But their branch in baguio at sm didnt meet my expectation of the original taste im craving for im kinda disappointed. My next try will be at Jose Manalo’s resto in quezon ave. and JT’s Manukan in gilmore near grinhills.Ive been to bacolod &iloilo and i must say it too that trully their chickens are one of the best. Have some recipes posted at home but unfortunately it wasnt a great try, so better luck next time housemates!!!
I am a native Bacolodnon and I have tried chicken Inasal from different Restaurant there in Bacolod but Chicen House Inasal is the best. And now I live here in VA, USA and I really missed it. I showed it to my co workers here in the Hospital where I work and they said It looks good and they wanted me to make and let them try it. SO I will get the recipe in here and will cook it myself. For sure they will like it. Than’ks CHICKEN HOUSE, see you in 2010. byeee
we watched namets! last week… it’s a movie about negrense food! grabe, i really felt like hopping on a plane back to bacolod. it’s been so long since i was last there! i will really set a weeklong (at least) vacation to go back there soon and try all the food! in the meantime, ok na ako dito sa bacolod chicken house, hehe. i guess a lot of people feel strongly about it too, based on the comments. :)
I miss Bacolod Chicken Inasal. I’ve been trying to duplicate the flavor but couldn’t quite get to it. The kind of vinegar definitely matters. It’s unfortunate that there are no Filipino stores where I live and couldn’t get my hands on either sugar cane or coconut vinegar. I’m marinating chicken thighs right now using malt vinegar. Will find out later if it works the same. If not, I’ll try cider vinegar next time.
I am an true blooded ilonggo and i can spot a true inasal.. which i did.. try MIB “Menks Inasal Bacolod in Real, Calamba.” No aircons just pure air and smoke from inasal grill. You should see its ilonggo staff as well and the bacolod mascarra gigantic collage on the wall. Try it to believe!! or call 049-8312121
basta namit gid ya ang inasal sang bacolod sang sa iloilo!! big difference….kalayo lang gid ya
Hello,
My mom usually cooks chicken inasal and its so delicious!yumyum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1my favorite…….
Gita,
The Chicken Bacolod in Aduana? I remember that, My mom and I used to eat there a lot tapos we would go for a milkshake sa MAGNOLIA ICE CREAM HOUSE.
I miss those days!!!!
After visiting Bacolod and tasting many of these recipies in your restaurant, we enjoyed them very much.
For those who are still yearning for the good ol’ fashion milk shake of magnolia ice cream house of aduana…they have changed it to aduana ice cream house, its located esl building ground floor at the back of easter shipping lines building (beside the condemend bir building at anda circle)– not only do they still serve the classic stuff they have also have the inasal now :-) their contact numbers: 5272883 — yes even the old waiters are still there serving :-)
I was able to taste chicken inasal and when I tasted it, this is already my favorite. I love the taste and this is the best for me. The Bacolod Chicken Inasal.
It is called INASAL from the hiligaynon term GIN ASAL (skewered and charcoal broiled).
Asalan is the barbeque stick made of bamboo which also adds flavor to the chicken.
Our mother was firm in always correcting people in calling it Inasal (not chicken barbeque) to make it distinctive from all other grilled chicken barbeques.
She was the original owner of Chicken House
vincent g share mo naman recipeng mommy mo pls..been dying to find a good recipe.thanks!
ang inasal na manok ay originated sa iloilo naging popular lng po sa bacolod!search po kayo!kc po migrate lng po ang tao sa negros dahil sa tubo noon!mga galing sa panay!ilonggo!tnx!
greetings!
how can i apply in your good company?
it could cause breast cancer…if you eat often…
For me, Bacolod Chicken House is THE BEST Inasal chicken in Metro Manila. The first time I dined in their Intramuros branch, I fought the urge to regurgitate my food in the CR so I could eat some more (but I din’t ever)!
And be careful with the different Bacolod Inasal restaurants in Metro Manila for the names can be confusing….
Bacolod Chicken House
is different from
Bacolod Chicken Inasal (Juday)
is different from
Inasal Bacolod Chicken
is different from
