Fresh From The Flower Farm

lotsa mums at Flower Farm

I will be the gladdest thing
Under the sun!
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one.
~Edna St. Vincent Millay, “Afternoon on a Hill”

step inside The Flower Farm

There is paradise behind a pair of gray gates, along a dusty and bumpy road somewhere in Tagaytay. Fortunately, the gates were opened to us one sunny afternoon, thanks to the cheerful and accommodating Ms. Anna delos Reyes, and we were treated to a tour of the farm with the very able Ess as our guide (Ess is a certified agriculturist from the Central University in Baguio, so expect to learn a lot on the tour if he’s leading it!).

one of The Flower Farm's many greenhouses

The tour started off with a bit of history as we learned that the farm started in 1984, beginning as a passion which soon ventured into an enterprise. Today The Flower Farm sits on approximately 7 hectares of land, with about 15 greenhouses dedicated to chrysanthemums, gerberas and various greenery.

Calathea Lutea at The Flower Farm

The rolling landscapes are punctuated with colorful blossoms, and even if the pocket gardens are well laid-out, you can still get lost in them, figuratively speaking, of course! Imagine yourself surrounded by green, leafy plants, tall enough to blot out the sun, yet spaced just so, to allow the rays to shine through here and there, accentuating bandera española, datura insignis (Angel’s Trumpet) and Justicia flowers.

feels like we're in The Shire

rest in their gazebo

After navigating the maze of flowers, we emerged on a hilltop overlooking a man-made “lake”, home to their tilapia, and an arbor which led us to a charming gazebo where we could sit and take in the scenery. Here, the hillsides were dotted with impatiens, bougainvillea, milfores (hydrangea) and lantana.

Lavender at The Flower Farm

From the gazebo, we visited their “orchidarium” which housed several beautiful orchid species. After that visual feast, our olfactory senses were tickled at the next stop—the herb garden which housed healthy families of mint, lavender, basil, dill, and rosemary.

the perfect scene for a wedding

Much more than growing flowers for their flower shops, arrangements and decorations, The Flower Farm is also open to corporate and private events. Imagine getting married among such beautiful flowers! Or consider what a refreshing change of pace the green surroundings can provide for team building and seminars. They also conduct group tours—a perfect vehicle for education and enlightenment as students and other interested parties can learn about nature, plants, flowers and gardens (we know we sure did!). Various plants, flowers, and herbs are also available for sale.

walking back along the path

It was late in the afternoon when we finished the walk-through. The sun was hanging low, shining just right in the sky, and the balmy breeze of Tagaytay whispering on our faces. We left feeling richer than we had started, for we were treated to such a visual feast, and nuggets of (plant) wisdom.

can't get enough of the sweet, sweet flowers

We can’t get enough of these flowers! So we’re sharing them here, together with inspiring verses to bring out the hopeless romantic in you (and, maybe, your green thumb!), just in time for Valentine’s Day.

  1. Nice place! I hope they have a place where you can eat so that while eating you have a chance to appreciate your surroundings better.
Just scanning over makes you feel relaxed a bit. I dream of owning a farm/resthouse in Tagaytay someday. Dreams are free and if you dream make it big! Miracles do happen.

  4. Hi,

Thank you for your post about Flower Farm. My fiance and I are getting married on Jan. 3, 2009 so far we don’t have a reception venue yet. Would you mind giving me who should I contact with regards to holding a wedding reception at the farm?

    Thanks in advance.
    Tina

  5. Hi! I love the place. Very peaceful and serene. I am currently looking for a venue for a reception and I am interested in doing it in your farm. It’s like a dream come true for me as soon as I set eyes on the place. But I heard you are fixing it still for such purpose. Do you have an idea when it will be available for market? My wedding is still on March 2009. Is that a doable date?

  8. hi, i’ve been browsing the net for days searching for different activities which me and my boyfriend could do this aug18 since it’s our 4th anniversary.
i just have some queries though, i’m having some trouble sending it through their site. anyways, would it be possible that a map or link to a map be posted?i’m not very familiar with the exact location of the place, probably a landmark would do..
do you think they give tours on weekdays, since 18th is a monday..
hope that they could also allow us to take a tour in the farm even if it’s just the two us.
    thanks a bunch!!:D

  9. *sigh* I just called them and they said they’re only open for visits during weekdays (Mon-Fri), from 8AM to 5PM.

Admission is now Php112 (this includes a 45-minute tour) and the minimum is 5 people per group.

I guess I can’t go there on the weekend after all. :(

    Posted by jelai | November 19, 2008, 2:20 pm
  12. jelai,

you may call the numbers listed above to ask them about working with them for your thesis. they’re very accommodating, so you shouldn’t have a problem talking to them.

    distant origin,

    thanks for the update!

i don’t know if they’ll whack me for this, but my sister and i pop by occasionally unannounced… we just buy potted herbs, which they allow us to do. however, i guess taking a tour is a different story.

    cat,

i don’t have a map to the place right now, but here are directions in the meantime: from the tagaytay rotonda, take the aguinaldo highway heading towards batangas.

a couple hundred meters after the mendez crossing, you’ll see a small road leading off to the right side marked by a high green post with various signs to places like flower farm, hacienda isabella, etc. (if you pass the two satellite dishes on the hill, you’ve gone too far; turn around and turn left at the first road after the sat dishes.)

turn right at this road and just keep going until you see a property on the left bounded by a high wall and a gray gate. there’s a flower farm sign so you won’t miss it.

we’ll put up a tagaytay map soon for easy reference. :)

  23. My family and I visited your farm last Friday, Feb. 13, 2009 at around 9:00am, but we were denied entry at the gate. The caretaker said you don’t accept walk in anymore. He said we had to ask permission from your office at Makati, such a hassle since we were already there. We were disappointed because we were looking forward to seeing your place which looked good in the web. Hope you inform the public since its a long way. We came from Fairview, Q.C

You can contact them through the contact numbers listed above to schedule a tour. Also, you might want to browse through the other comments above, there are other bits of useful information provided by our readers. Thanks!
