One of the more recent additions to BF’s collection of restaurants and bars, Chill Box Diner is a bit of a surprise. The name, the logo, and the general look—right down to the color scheme—all suggest a 50’s style American diner, the sort populated by Archie Andrews and the gang, or perhaps a roadside hour greasy spoon, churning out quick burgers and grits for anonymous travelers, served by waitresses that call everyone “hon.”

Instead, Chill Box offers a mix of Filipino, Chinese, and Japanese dishes, as well as what I can best identify as “bar food,” which is rather appropriate, since they also serve beer and mixed drinks, and stay open until 2 in the morning. (The Pinoy dishes are of the “silog” variety, with some sizzling steaks thrown in for good measure; Chinese cuisine is represented by dimsum selections and some pancit; and the Japanese food is the fried kind.)

Since we came here for dinner, we passed on the margaritas and ordered a T-Bone Steak (P130) and Kakiage (P80) with Iced Tea (P30)… then, swayed by the cheap prices, we added some Cheese Sticks (P65) and Fried Siomai (P29). The place was pretty full, considering it had just been open a week or so, which could’ve been why our orders took some time to arrive (strangely though, the steak came first). When it did arrive, the food was a little disappointing—the steak was a bit tough and a little bland, the rice was hard and dry, and the cheese sticks weren’t crispy.

Granted, what they lacked in terms of food, they made up for with service; the owners graciously replaced our cheese sticks and plied us with complimentary siopao after checking up on us. The fried siomai stood out amidst the other lackluster offerings—this time the wrapper was nice and crispy, and the filling tasted like sisig, with just a hint of sweetness.

The interiors are bright and clean, and the feel is casual and familiar, like a homey cafeteria. This is one bar in BF that doesn’t have the typical beachy-beerhouse atmosphere. Maybe it’s because Chill Box is a family affair: though it’s actually owned by Josh, a young graduate of HRM from Southville, his mom Girlie, having been in the food industry herself, also holds court. Based on our first experience though, the resto part of this resto bar still needs some improvement, so I’m filing it under bar in my mental directory.

food doesnt look that great
hiro,
yeah, medyo kulang pa in terms of food. mas bar nga yata talaga sya… though people come in to eat as well, maybe because of the prices.
Tried chilbox few months ago and it was ayt. Ok yung siomai. Nakakain na din ako sa isang branch nila sa may southville. My BF is one of the teachers in the school.
Comment ko lang po. Kung pwede ay turuan nyo naman mag salita yung mga empleyado ninyo. for me, when you talk to your guest, it makes us feel welcome. I also noticed that the owners are a young couple. I heard they graduated from southille too. Nakita ko sila sa branch sa southville kaya lang hindi din nakikipag-usap sa mga customers.Sana ma-practice nila natutunan sa skul.Naglalaro lang ng computer kasi. Parang di serious sa negosyo.
