Original Malabon Goodies at Dolor’s Kakanin

Dolor's Kakanin Sapin-sapin

My memories of Dolor’s Kakanin date back to my student days when my friend Jopie, who hails from Malabon, always brought me the famous colorful sapin-sapin. I suppose it was her way of thanking me for bringing her home every time there was a downpour and she found it hard to commute home (even then Malabon was known for its flooding). Since then, I’ve always had a special liking for that particular delicacy, and Aling Dolor’s version in particular.

What do I really like about the products of Dolor’s? First, of all, it’s unquestionably authentic. I have tasted several look-a-likes, but they cannot come close to the consistency, chewyness, color, texture, and taste of Dolor’s sapin-sapin, which has just the right sweetness.

Dolor's Kakanin's take away goodies

Their Palabok (from P170 for an 8” diameter bilao, good for three people, to P900 for a 17” diameter bilao, good for over 20 hungry souls), which I only got to taste five years ago (imagine that!), reminds me of my childhood days in Parañaque, where I grew up. My lola always said that a good pancit palabok should be “con todos recados” (with lots of ingredients), which is why I’m so critical of restaurants that offer palabok with a lot of recados missing.

So when I found out that they opened a branch in BF, I cajoled Betty into dropping by to see if they were really the one—the original Dolor’s of Malabon. We didn’t have the time or space to buy sapin-sapin or palabok then (having just had lunch), so we just bought some sweets and moved on to our next errands. But we promised to be back for a taste test, and to share our verdict with you guys.

Finally, I had the chance to check on Dolor’s again, and I discovered that the sapin-sapin (from P130 for an 8″ diameter bilao, to P370 for a 17″ bilao) hasn’t changed a bit. I imagine the secret recipe must be very well kept for them to maintain the taste through all those years. I also had some Yema Rolls (P80) which I can only describe as heavenly. I wanted to take home some Pianono (a pastry that looks like a cake roll, but smaller and loaded with lots of sugar granules, P15 per piece) for my friend who loves the stuff, but they were all sold out. I suppose next time I’ll have to go in the morning to catch the different array of goodies before the other kakanin enthusiasts beat me to it.

  8. I love Dolor’s not only for the pancit and sapin-sapin but also for their bagoong, patis, achara and tinapang bangus! They are authentic Malabon treats and I’m glad I don’t have to brave the floods nor waste a full tank of gas to enjoy them!

  10. ever since wifey told me about your branch in Sucat while i was there in Nov 2009, I became a regular. Imagine I was able to bring to New Zealand the following: Sapin-sapin, pichi-pichi and Yema Rolls. I happen to enjoy your Pancit Malabon and Rellenong Bangus. I’d definitely be back there when I come to visit Manila again in the near future
