You know that old James Taylor song “Up on the Roof” where he sings “On the roof, its peaceful as can be / And there the world below don’t bother me…” That’s the sort of quiet I look for sometimes, when I need to think and, well, corny as it may sound, rise above the cares of everyday life. I figure he must’ve been talking about a higher roof, maybe the top of a condominium high rise in the middle of a city, but I’ve found my own roof for quiet moments.

It’s on top of a Yellow Cab (well, not really on top of… it’s the balcony on the second floor). The Yellow Cab in Las Piñas, along Alabang Zapote Road, in fact. The place is quiet, there’s an empty lot behind it, a tree-shaded lot in the village on the other side of the wall that borders the lot, and a small nursery right below it. There are huge yellow umbrellas to keep the sun from beating down directly on you, but it’s usually nice and sunny enough to cheer you up; the wind blows wildly, and apart from the hassle of having it potentially rip your paper plate off the table (along with your pizza) and blow it to kingdom come, it’s a pleasant wind, which keeps you cool if the umbrellas aren’t enough to do the trick.

I was there recently, enjoying some of Yellow Cab’s non-pizza offerings: Tortilla Soup (P95; it’s not authentic tortilla soup, but it’s nice and hot and tomato-ey and it has generous amounts of corn and black pepper) and Twice Baked Potato Halves (P195; the picture looks jaundiced because I took it under the yellow umbrella). Sometimes I have the Charlie Chan Chicken pasta (P215), or some Spaghetti & Meatballs (P215). I can’t usually eat the whole thing on my own, so I have my leftovers wrapped and enjoy them for dinner (or whatever the next meal happens to be). I suppose I could do that with pizza too, though pizza is usually more fun to share.

Finally—supreme indulgence, this—I take two cans of Coke (P32 per can) with me, and lots of ice in their clear plastic cups. I don’t know why, but for some reason the Coke at Yellow Cab is consistently good—no flat cans here. Maybe it’s all the salty food I eat with it.

This is my favorite branch of Yellow Cab, because of the roof, and because a just-right-for-working Starbucks is in the same building. I gather my thoughts with lunch, and I’m ready for work with coffee. Plus they’re open 24 hours as well. And since, as James Taylor says, “At night the stars they put on a show for free,” I can enjoy the show anytime. Up on the roof of Yellow Cab.
