California Berry – Addict sa ‘yo…gurt!

California Berry Yogurt with baby grapes, cherries, and white chocolate chips

I have a confession to make. For weeks now, I haven’t been spending my weekends trawling the South, on the lookout for new shops and restos. So OK, I’ve been busy working on the technical details of the site. I’ve spent weekends unwinding, skirting the borders of burnout, getting away from it all. Valid excuses, to be sure. But the real reason is that I’ve become, as my friend Chris calls it, an addict.

California Berry Yogurt with cherries, banana, and white chocolate chips

I’m addicted to frozen yogurt. And sadly, I haven’t found a shop that sells this stuff in the South. So every weekend, I head off to Silver City, eagerly anticipating a loaded cup of California Berry yogurt topped with fresh fruits and chocolate. The trip provides a perfect excuse to meet up with friends (or perhaps the friends provide a perfect excuse to eat yogurt, hahaha!): Chris and Lods both live in the area, and Lods, if anything, is at the yogurt place more often than I am. I’ve been harassing both of them to finance a franchise here in the South, so I won’t have to waste so much gas just to satisfy a craving.

My loyalty to this brand is quite surprising. By my own assessment, The White Hat has better—perhaps more authentic—yogurt and a wider range of choices, with more fresh fruit. But when the weekend rolls around, I head to Ortigas instead of MOA (avoiding the mall has a lot to do with it, plus it’s not so easy to drag friends there, especially for the sole purpose of having yogurt).

California Berry Yogurt with mochi balls, kiwi, and white chocolate chips

Still, there’s a lot to like about California Berry. It’s relatively cheap: the yogurt base is P60 for a small cup, P85 for a medium one, and P115 for the large (over the weeks I’ve graduated to the large cup). That’s similar to, mostly even less than, prices for other yogurt places, but the difference becomes apparent when the toppings enter the equation: a large cup with three toppings is just P145, whereas at other places (Lulubelle at Rockwell in particular), those same three toppings could add a good 90 bucks to the total (The White Hat weighs in at just 10 bucks more in this case). (Individual toppings cost P20 each.)

kiwi, mochi ball pieces, and white chocolate chips

Flavor-wise, the yogurt may not be the best, but it is still very good. The frozen yogurt is mixed from a liquid formula, which means it has that slick yogurt-y texture, unlike some granular versions. It’s sweet enough to satisfy ice cream lovers, but each bite carries an unmistakable yogurt tang. I won’t bother nitpicking about fat and sugar content, since I just spoil the effect by adding maraschino cherries and chocolate chips anyway.

Location is another thing: the isolated location of California Berry (next to the Silver City parking lot) may be a turn off for some, but for me, it means a quiet place to enjoy my yogurt undisturbed by the usual mall bustle. I don’t know if the location hurts their business, but there always seems to be a steady stream of customers dropping in for some yogurt to go (the good thing about being right next to the parking lot is that it’s not difficult for take out orders; the first ten minutes are free so it’s in and out for a quick yogurt break).

California Berry Yogurt with blueberry, peaches, and chocolate chips

I try to stay true to the whole idea of yogurt being a healthy food, so my toppings are usually fruits, with some chocolate chips thrown in as an indulgence. So far I’ve had peaches, blueberries, and choco chips (an old Ice Monster favorite combo); bananas, cherries, and white choco chips; and baby grapes, cherries, and white choco chips. Lods is partial to the mochi balls, which she mixes up with fruits and chocolate. Their menu says they carry green apple, strawberry, and mango, in addition to various candy sprinkles, nuts, and cereals, but I haven’t come across those fruits yet—each week it’s a toss up as to what they’ll have available. They also have smoothies (P115 for medium, P145 for large) and signature creations (essentially their normal yogurt with preselected toppings).

the California Berry topping selection

I am so, sooo, waiting for the day a frozen yogurt outlet opens in the South. Or maybe there are, but I haven’t heard of them yet. If you know of any, please let me know! You’ll be doing the environment a favor and saving me tons of gas.

  4. Tita Betty,
Sayang, Cold Rock Express at ATC doesn’t carry the yoghurt line, but if you ever find yourself in Greenbelt 3, try the Cold Rock yoghurts. You can have them with the same mix ins as the ice creams. I’m sure you’ll love them too.

  6. Nico,

  8. Hi Ly!

According to their website, they use fructose. So it’s still sugar, but supposedly not as difficult to digest. Their claim is, “because of its metabolic qualities, many people with sugar-related problems can enjoy fructose.”

The White Hat is not completely sugar free din, so difficult for diabetics. Although I know some who cheat and indulge every now and then. :) Depende how your body handles it, I guess.

  9. Ly,

I just realized how “marketing-y” that answer sounded, hahaha. :)

The short answer is, no, it’s not sugar free hehehe. :)

  13. I California Berry over the weekend but found Yogurbud in Podium to taste better.
Also I was checking out the sugar content of a medium cup - they say the calorie count is only about 36+ calories. But I checked out the sugar content and it still came out to more than 12 teaspoons worth (more than a can of soda).
I hope I’m wrong and will someone pls correct me if I am.

  14. freyes,

according to the nutritional info on their website, a serving size of 4 fl. oz. has 8.8 calories and 17g sugar. of course, that just refers to the plain yogurt. depending on the toppings you choose, the sugar will definitely add up.

i tried yogurbud recently (haven’t written about it yet) and i found the yogurt to be the most yogurt-asim-y, so if you prefer yogurbud, i can understand why you’d be concerned about the sugar content of caliberry. yogurbud also had healthier toppings to choose from.

that said, i still constantly crave california berry… baka may gayuma yung unang cup na nakain ko! :)

hope the nutritional info above helps. :)

  16. I saw the 8.8 calorie claim and the 17 grams of sugar in the nutrition facts, which immediately confused me: each gram of sugar is worth 4 calories in any biochemistry and nutrition book. how can there be 8.8 calories in 17 grams of sugar? hm, methinks there is a discrepancy.
