For a while it may have seemed like I laid off the yogurt: I think the whole of November went by without a single trip to California Berry, which for me is unusual indeed. Contrary to all appearances, however, I have not been idle—just silently eating my way through a bunch of different yogurt places. I visited BTIC (Better Than Ice Cream) at Town, grudgingly forked over some dough for extra nut toppings at Lulubelle, tried some Bulla on a stick in the lobby of Makati Supermarket, even cooked up a batch at home (it was fascinating, really). I was amused to find that Men’s Health did a feature on yogurt for their December issue; they had a listing of different yogurt places in the metro (and as far as Clark, remember) and I had tried most of them (one of these days when I find myself in QC, I mean to try Green Mango). (Another great resource for those on the hunt for more yogurt: Lori’s very detailed ratings on Dessert Comes First.)

Most of the other places I tried didn’t inspire immediate posts, so I just stocked up on pictures and figured I would do a comprehensive listing eventually. On the way home this evening, I decided to drop by the Hobbes & Landes in Bonifacio High Street to get some Yoh-gürt Froz, and I totally enjoyed the experience. Funny timing, really, since I’d just dropped my camera off for servicing, and my phone (the one with the decent camera) was dead, so I didn’t get to take pictures of my winning order. I’d tried Yoh-gürt Froz before with Lods (hence the pictures you see here), but I didn’t particularly like my toppings (they call them “Top-ins”): apple cinnamon, walnuts, and chocolate chips (yes, I know, it’s a weird combination, I was asking for it). Lods had her usual mochi with some blueberries and chocolate balls, which turned out alright, but not too memorable.

This time, on the heels of a “healthy diet” conversation with Nick, I decided to try just fruits and nuts, with none of my usual indulgent chocolate chips. So I ordered kiwi, strawberry, and almonds; since they didn’t have enough kiwi for a whole serving, I ended up with peaches instead (oh well… scratch the fresh fruit requirement). It turned out to be an excellent combination that may well rid me of my compulsion to add something obviously sweet to the mix. Of course, it helped that the yogurt itself was rather sweet to begin with (the server said it was sugar free and didn’t have any substitute sweeteners, but I’m not sure I buy that).

The clincher here for me was the amount of yogurt they put in the large serving—they call it Indulge, which costs P110 for the yogurt and P40 for an additional 3 Top-ins. The regular size is called Enjoy and goes for 80 bucks. You can’t order less Top-ins… that is, if you just want one kind, they’ll give you three servings worth of it and still charge you 40 bucks. The cup was well-packed, and the toppings were close to falling out. Maybe since it was late, the servers were feeling extra generous. Or maybe the extra kiwi that I got them to throw in (hey, what were they going to do with half a scoopful?) added to the effect. Whatever the case, I was very happy with my yogurt, and I’m pleased to think that the frozen-yogurt-dessert-bar is coming closer to home.
