Sam Won Garden

Sam Won Garden bimbap
Sam Won Garden Bibimbap:. before…

So, as promised, the big idea this year, to be able to update Southbound regularly, is to add directory entries with corresponding short posts containing commentary about a specific establishment. This here’s my first attempt. :)

Sam Won Garden Bibimbap
… and after!

The establishment in question is Sam Won Garden (here’s the directory entry), one of the more established Korean restaurants in BF (which is saying a lot, given that Korean restos here are a dime a dozen). Some quick points from our resident Korean food expert (my sister; and no, she’s not Korean, hahaha): “It’s very good.” (Now do you see why it takes a long time to post? Wehehe.)

Guess who’s the real Korean? :)

OK, seriously: Sam Won is the sort of Korean restaurant that still uses live coals to cook their food (we always wonder if there have been any casualties already), and has the sort of elaborate ventilation system that manages to keep you from smelling too much like ulam when you eat there. The restaurant is run by two very friendly women: that’s one of them, Jennifer, posing with my sister and her husband (she did the requisite peace hand gesture, but I didn’t get to capture it, aw). It’s obviously authentic, and popular with those who know best; at any given time, 90% of the clientele is Korean. They serve lots of nice side dishes, including some we’ve never seen before, like kimchi-drenched tofu (spicy on the outside, chewy on the inside), caramelized peanuts (think raw sung sung peanuts with arnibal), a small squished meatball-like patty, and “lots of stuff” (says the Korean food expert; she says her gross lack of articulation is due to a hangover from the New Year festivities). Our standard order is the Imported Mixed Meat (P700; more expensive than most, but enough for two to three) and the Dolsot Bibimbap (P250).

Sam Won Garden Imported Mixed Meat… grrr… meat!

Pricing is at par with most Korean restaurants: a meal for two to three people will set you back P1,000 (depending on your appetite for meat). There are a few sections with floor seating, but mostly they have tables, which means no wild scramble for your shoes at the end of your meal.

So. That’s it, folks. At a loss to end this, I will say as the Koreans say (when you get up and leave): kam sah hamnida!

  1. We’ve been experimenting with Korean food/restos since late last year. We tried Minato, across Central, and Bi Won, near the gate, both in BF. Bi WOn serves much better (and more tasty) food. Sam Won Garden will be our next stop!

  2. @Rico, let us know how you like it! We’ll feature Blooming Garden soon… yun ang pinakafavorite ni ate, aka “Korean food expert.”

After our dinner at Sam Won, guess where we went to post? Syempre Serenitea, hahaha! :D

  3. I agree, my bf and I have tried a number of Korean restos in BF–but we always go back to Bi Won.

Good value in money, they can also adjust the level of spice they put on your food, and also fast service…and oww, better appetizers.

  4. Medyo familiar ako sa ilang korean restos na nabanggit sa comments. Minsan din namin silang naging clients. You see, i work in a korean advertising company at karamihan ng mga clients namin na ginawan ng mga signages ay mostly mga korean restos. I used to design a simple menu for Bi Won pero hindi ko alam kung binago na nila.

Merong korean resto sa Madrigal. Bago lang ata, SOGAMIGA ang pangalan. Along panaranaque, marami din kaming clients kaso di ko na maalala kung ano name. Itry ko nahapin para masuggest sa gusto mag try ng korean food.

  5. We’ve tried both Sam Won and Bi Won. The differences we encountered are: 1. After the first round of appetizers at Sam Won, they will charge you P40.00 for every additional order. In Bi Won, you can have as much as you want as many times as you ask. So, if you want eat-all-you can kimchi, then it’s Bi Won for you.
    2. The Dolsot Bibimbap in Sam Won is so much better than Bi Won. Bi Won’s is drier and not as tasty or “malinamnam.” This is why we keep coming back to Sam Won for this dish.
