Kanin Club UP-Ayala Technohub

After a long break writing articles for Southbound, this serves as my comeback article. Betty, here you are. I know I owe you more articles. I’ve been hitting up Northgate more often just to write them. :D –Hanz

Kanin Club in UP-Ayala Technohub

Kanin Club is one of my favorite places to eat at on a Friday night. When I got news (surprisingly thru Facebook) that there was a Kanin Club up north in the UP-Ayala Techno Hub, I knew I had to try it too. Since most of my weekends are spent in Quezon City with Angela (the future wife-nagger), all it took was a quick mention, and we immediately scheduled a visit.

So lo and behold, we went there last weekend: me and Angela, and tagging along was Angela’s niece Len and her daughter Toni. The place is what you might think of as the equivalent of our own Northgate: call centers all around with the main public place/minimall in the middle.

Arriving there shortly past noon, we were expecting a lot of people (which there were). Good thing the waiter managed to secure a nice place in the back for us. Since this branch is kind of (to say the least) far away from their first two stores, I was hoping that the food taste and quality would not suffer, which often happens with franchises/branches that stray too far from their main locations.

After settling in our spot, I noticed that the old Manila theme is carried out rather nicely in this branch. We were greeted with smiles from the staff, as you would expect from the other Kanin Club stores. We had our menu, and were faced with the question of what to order… tough decision, since I wanted to make sure that the food we tried did justice to their flagship stores down south.

After much thought, I ordered my all-time favorites, mainly the Sinigang na Liempo, Crispy Dinuguan, Crispy Liempo and Fresh Lumpia and servings of All-you-can-Kanin. “Wow are we gonna eat all that?” blurted Angela’s niece, to which I just smiled and gave a resounding “YES!”

Service was pretty quick. It was give or take around 20 minutes before our orders were served. We were treated to the familiar steaming hot yellow-brownish soup and aroma of the sinigang in its white bowl, the chunky clumps of crispy meat in black sauce of the dinuguan, the thin strips of golden brown crispy liempo, and the bulging lumpia with generous amounts of the peanut sauce. All this with hot steaming servings of (unlimited!) white rice: I was sure to enjoy every bite of it.

My fears were  gone. As expected, the food was uber-delicious. Yummy. Heavenly. Satisfying. I was now all smiles while eating, my comparison anxiety forgotten. Food had undoubtedly the same Kanin Club goodness you’d expect. With the scrumptious Filipino food with a very homey old manila ambiance and a nice view of the koi pond in the back, this was turning out to be a very (very!) nice lunch. Angela and I were already familiar with the food, and Len and Toni were happy with the food and their first Kanin Club experience. It’s a good thing that we bought along Len and Toni, since eating all this food is much more fun with company. It’s like eating at a fiesta when you’re at Kanin Club, and a fiesta isn’t complete without friends to share.

Kanin Club Turon

Lunch was over, but I wasn’t finished. I still needed some dessert. So I ordered the Turon a la carte. This is actually the first time I ordered dessert in Kanin Club as most of the time I end the meal too full to eat more. When dessert was served, I was all smiles again. The turon was not the ordinary turon either—I was trying to find the banana, but found it to be a delicious medley of banana, langka, macapuno and ube halaya, all wrapped in lumpia wrapper and deep fried. It’s served with your choice of ice cream (ube, queso, durian, mango)—a perfect dessert to end a perfect lunch.

So another point for their latest branch. I’m sure that I’ll be back there with more of my friends from the QC area in tow. Now whether I’m down south or up north, I know there’s a familiar taste that I can go to.
