// About

Welcome to Southbound!!!

Southbound is a locally owned, locally operated, and locally based blogazine (blog-cum-magazine). We like to keep things local, if you haven’t yet noticed.

Southbound features restaurants, stores, churches, schools, places, events, people, and all the other things you’re likely to stumble upon in the South.

Southbeginnings:

Southbound began as a persistent frustration with not being able to answer that most pressing of all weekend questions: Ano gagawin natin?” We noticed that while we’d veto all suggestions North of Makati (”Masyadong matraffic,” “Mahal ang gas,” and “Mahal ang toll,”), we still couldn’t manage to think of any other places to go which were a bit closer to home. So we inevitably ended up going to the well-worn Alabang Town Center, or equally likely, staying home instead (”Dito na lang tayo, kakatamad maligo e.“). Soon we discovered that six consecutive weekends in bed tend to get a little stale, and we decided to venture forth and find something to do and somewhere to go, all without having to shell out more than the absolute necessary minimum gas and toll required. The result is the site that’s occupying your screen right now.

Although the preceding paragraph is generally true, we also really wanted a way to spread the word about the great stores that are constantly opening (and, sadly, closing, too) in and around the South. We figured since we’d appreciate having all this information in one place, other people might, too. So the site is also a way of sharing all the things we’ve learned about the South from our own intrepid explorations.

Southbound Says…

Southbound doesn’t claim it is the ultimate expert on all things South, although we’d like to grow into that soon enough. Our features are done in a more exploratory vein, and are not meant to be the final word on the matter. Sure, we have reviews, but our reviews are essentially just our opinions, and we acknowledge that those opinions can be clouded in one way or another (try sampling everything at the bar and staying sober enough to write a decent article, why don’t you?). That said, Southbound would appreciate your thoughts, comments, suggestions, and contributions! Just drop us a line at southbound.ph@gmail.com if you’d like to be part of our regular group of writers. You can also just write us to blow off steam or toss around your brilliant ideas.

We’re still in the process of building our site, reader base and the Southbound community in general. Feel free to spread the word to your friends living in the South, working in the South, courting someone from the South, or just those who like eating food, reading food blogs, and ogling food pictures. But remember that Southbound isn’t all about food either: we’re planning to feature places, events, personalities, and all other things that you can find in the South. And we want to do it in a way that will help build community pride and let the Southern spirit shine through. So stick around and watch us grow! We’ve got big plans for Southbound.

We think that our tongue in cheek approach is strongly characteristic of what we love about the South: that laid back, without-a-care-in-the-world attitude. So sit back, relax, read, explore, and remember: don’t take us (or yourself!) too seriously: you can let your guard down… you’re among friends.

(Oh, and a quick definition for you out-of-towners: “The South,” mythical area though it sounds, is the general area in the south of Metro Manila. That means the Muntiparlas (Muntinlupa, Paranaque, Las Pinas) area, the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon; if you’re wondering what the “R” is for, it’s for Rizal, which used to encompass parts of what is now Muntiparlas, but now it’s not exactly too far south anymore) area, and anywhere else that’s not geographically in the south but that we wish were here.)

not just the food, but imagine, from one village it connects to another til you reach alabang without traffic. and daming free parking when you go out on a gimmik. i like south. :)

welcome to southbound! aw, we miss the dayrit’s already… and the rock radio cafe (one underground bar that immediately comes to mind, especially since it was in the same area as dayrit’s), though that’s moved to a new venue. we’ll do a feature on miss polly’s cakes soon (we have one on burn magazine too), and hopefully we’ll figure out where hungree burger is. :) any recollections where? anyone out there have a clue? :)

  35. Hi there fellas! I found out about this blogazine through my friend, Ria Puangco.

Southbound is absolutely remarkable! I love the concept, the features (categories) and can perfectly relate to them all as I’m a weekend southbound-er too, I suppose. (I was born and raised in Tanauan, Batangas. And though living in Makati to make ends meet, I visit my folks house as often as I can.)

I shared to Ria some of my comments and promised her that I’ll try my best to contribute to Southbound’s growing momentum. (If accepted here in the site course!)

I like the category name: SOUTHOLOGY. Though I’m not exactly aware of what it means based on what’s already gathered, the term strikes me as a “way of life” and a “culture of its own.” Just a quick comment (maybe I can work on this too as an attempt to contribute), maybe this category can feature distinct and rich cultures, habits and lifestyles of the South.

Anyway, I better end my comment here before I put my words and ideas waaaay before myself.

    CONGRATULATIONS! MORE POWER TO SOUTHBOUND!

    CHEERS!

Posted by Jojo Roxas | October 13, 2007, 1:35 pm
  36. hi jojo!

thanks for the feedback! great insights! btw, we’re working on reducing the number of categories and just organizing things using tags… thanks for pointing that out!

and thanks for your comments on the “southology” category… right now it holds the letters from the editor and all those “muni-muni” posts about why the south is the way it is… pretty much how you understood it!

welcome aboard, and feel free to contribute! :)

    Posted by Betty | October 15, 2007, 11:12 am
  37. hi there,

it’s a good thing i stumbled upon southbound.ph while waiting for my lunch break… the places that you feature are great… places i will surely bring my wife to when she asserts for a date…

  39. I’ve never really explored the South, except when I go to the airport or until recently Mall of Asia.

I have a similar blog, http://taga-qc.blogspot.com. It also has the same goals with southbound.ph (”we’re planning to feature places, events, personalities, and all other things that you can find in the South”), except that it all applies to Quezon City. Because of this, I’ll be adding this site to my link list. More power!

I lived “up north” most of my college life so when i started working my rule was no matter what time i had to go to work the next day, if i finish anytime before 2am, then I AM GOING HOME TO THE SOUTH! Nice job celebrating the south in your website, will visit it regularly and take note of what to see when i get back to Manila. Will spread the word too. ps. hello to the batch!

  62. I came across this site by sheer desperation when I couldn’t find a more structured info about MULTIPARLAS and it’s many places to go (and eat). This site truly is very timely and helpful… keep it up.

I am glad I can just log on here and view many topics from my favorite places to eat, to cars and even happenings in town. Put some info on our city’s government too and maybe some street/avenue, info or changes.

I’ve forwarded this site to many of my friends and families all over (US and UK) so they can get updated too. I’ve also forwarded this to a few American friends of mine who are thinking of calling the Philippines home in the hopes of making them choose to live South of Manila. Some traffic rules and regulations would also be nice…

    More power! Great work!

Although i now live with my family WAAAAYYY down south - Cebu City (don’t get me wrong, it’s a paradise island with great mountain view and beaches around the island)– i still long for southern M. Manila’s laid-back yet cool attitude.

  74. Hi guys! :) I was very very happy to stumble into your site. I’m a Southerner, writer, and food lover myself, though I mus admit that I still have a lot to discover about the South (even though I’ve lived here all my life). :D

I hope to contribute some write-ups soon. :) Keep it up!

  80. Hi,

I stumbled upon your site while searching Google with keywords like “Paseo de sta rosa”. The reason I’m looking for a place nearby e.g. Greenfield City to setup a photography studio for portraits and other in-studio related photography such as advertising. I would like to ask if you can point me to any leads that I can get in touch with in getting a decent space. Thanks! And btw, great site!

    Regards,
    Jared
