Jars and More at Unique Finds

The quest for Sam Milby’s jars ends and Johanna’s artistic flair begins at a quaint roadside stall in Tagaytay as she stumbles across a “unique find” down South.

TRIbeca Chinese New Year Festivities

To celebrate the Year of the Rat, Landco Pacific’s TRIbeca Private Residences will have an open house and various activities from February 7 to 9 at the project site along the East Service Road in Sucat, Muntinlupa. Activities include a Dragon Dance, Feng Shui readings, a Chinese Serenade, and henna tattoos and Chinese painting for the kids. For inquiries, contact Marissa Angcaya at 842-8000 or (0906) 345-0341.

Driving Off the Roof

Check out the new driving range on the rooftop of the new building at the end of Aguirre, as Jayvee takes you there via video. No, he didn’t whack some of the roof yet, he’s just sniffing around.

Great Value at The Li’l Nail Shop in Santana Grove

Since Santana Grove opened a couple of months ago, lots of readers have suggested that we feature it, and for good reason: the open mall, if you will, is the best place to go along Sucat Road. The compound is bright and airy, like a less congested Eastwood, or a closer-to-home Paseo de Sta. Rosa, […]

Climbing the Walls at SM

My friend Chris and I have started this “OK-we-need-to-exercise-but-it-has-to-be-fun” thing recently. Instead of being gym buddies, which is a difficult proposition since Chris lives in Valle Verde (but is an honorary Southerner, given the ease with which you can drag her here), we decided to do a fun but physically challenging activity regularly, the idea […]

Wargames the Airsoft Way

Here I am, hung over on the long holiday: I considered a posting holiday of my own, since I haven’t been out and about much recently (sometimes the most peaceful vacations are the ones we spend at home… though of course, there aren’t too many nice pictures to show for it). Instead, I dug through […]

Decorations to Die For at Aling Mila’s - It’s a scream!

Boo!
Oh my goodness, no. That is not a scene from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” music video. To BF Homes residents and visitors regularly plying Aguirre Avenue, this has become a familiar, if not anticipated display come October.

While strewing skulls across the yard and displaying bats and pumpkins has not yet reached fever pitch here in the […]

Coming Home to Roost: The Story of the United Pigeon Society

Tucked away in a simple unassuming lot in one of the industrial compounds along Sucat Road is the home of a most unusual community of friend and fowl. This compound, known as the UPS Loading Area, is not, as it sounds (or even as its location in Global Business Park, near the airport, implies), […]

Wow! Salon: Haircuts – and prices! – that make you go “WOW!”

Unless long, scraggly hair (and that means facial hair, too!) is part of your Halloween ensemble, then it’s high time you should probably get a haircut (considering that the holiday season is fast approaching, best to start looking great!).
Just recently, my twins started sporting unruly do’s – their last haircut was about 10 months ago, […]

Kartini Asia - An oasis in Town

If you close your eyes, or train them away from the large poster overhead featuring Dawn Zuluetas, er, back, you can almost forget that youre in Town Center. The garden is quiet and calm, the ceiling fan in the gazebo rotates lazily overhead, and drops of water from the fountain trickle merrily into the landscaped […]

Escape the Suburbs at Kartini Spa

The going rate for a home service massage is around 250 bucks. So why on earth am I now shelling out almost thrice that amount for a massage? The answer, a take on the classic “location, location, location,” is “ambiance, ambiance, ambiance.” After all, being a massage virgin (I have steadfastly refused to try a […]

Guzzie’s Carwash and Auto Detailing - Bringing me out of the Dirty South

Ive been planning to have Southbound car stickers made for some time now. Only I dont think Ill be using them on my car: its so dirty, it hardly seems like an appropriate ambassador for the site. So Ive been toying with the idea of a sticker that reads, Welcome to the Dirty South instead […]

Rainy Day Diving Perks - Sale at Scuba World

One of the most spiritual experiences Ive had is falling off a bangka and plunging into the ocean. With full scuba gear, of course. When I say spiritual experience, I dont mean the light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel type. After the initial hesitation and the first splash when your tank hits the water, theres a tremendous feeling of peace […]

Tryin’ out a foot spa at Sawasdee Siam

The Phase 3 branch of Sawasdee Siam, featured here, is no longer operating. But the branch in Phase 1, near Bacolod Chicken House, still seems to be open.

I’ve always been rather proud of my feet. Most Pinoys like to commemorate visits to foreign lands and new places with pictures of themselves standing next to sign […]

Rollin’: Southern Car Culture

One thing I love about the South is the abundance of sexy and beautiful cars. I love cars: from broken-down restored classics to über expensive European sports cars and everything in between. But in my heart I have a spot for the normal tweaked and tuned cars. I live in Paranaque, and I’ve worked in […]

What puts the Aaaaaahhh in Aesthetic Science

One of the first things my students said to me when I started teaching in January was, “Maam, hihintayin naming magkatagihawat kayo.“ (To the non-Filipino speaking folks out there, that means, as only high school kids can say it, “We’re just waiting for your face to break out in pimples.”) True enough, a few weeks […]

I Haight Music!!!

Sorry, this establishment is no longer operating. :(

No, I don’t, actually. In a few weeks, I’ll be making music my only source of income, and I have to love it. I do, I assure you; ever since I got back on the music train two years ago, I’ve been meaning to look around in the […]

Coffeenista: More comments from the karaoke front

Here’s Nick’s take on Coffeenista. This time we came around for the food. Read the intro and my take on the place too. -ed

Coffeenista. Sounds like Communista. Or Sandinista. This coffee shops name makes one think its a meeting place for subversives in the south. It is, though, part of the club […]

Coffeenista: No need to “Cofeeoke”

This post on Coffeenista is another old relic we dug up from The TIC Blog. This was back in the days when we just went there to have some drinks; I also included another post with Nick’s take on the place, after we’d tried having dinner there as well. -ed

I am so not […]

Mandarine Reflexology Foot & Body Spaaaaaahhh…

While we’re on the topic of all things Chinese, avail yourself of centuries worth of their healing wisdom with a reflexology foot massage from Mandarine. One of our more popular posts, we’ve sent quite a lot of people over to their doors already!
